300MP use in revoler

Time to assemble some loads for my S&W Model 58.”, .41 Mag. This has a 4” bull barrel and fixed sights.

The bullet is from a Hensley & Gibbs 220-grain Keith type 4-cavity mold.

There is about a 3/4- pound of 300MP on the shelf that should be given a try. I’ve been told that MP stands for Magnum Pistol. However, with a plain base cast bullet and zero belief that “velocity is king”, I’m looking for a reasonable, not a “magnumized” powder charge.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry Tom. I've used a boat load of other powders in my 41s but not 300MP. I notice that Alliant does not list the 41 for this powder. Jeez.

On the burn rate charts, it's comparable to H110 and 296 (thereabouts) so a lighter charge of the stuff is probably not a real good idea. Pedal to the metal is the way to go I figure. Did you find any Alliant load data for the stuff in 41 Magnum?

I've used the powder in both the 38-55 and 30-06 light loads with good success and would think the same process would work on light revolver loads. There is no data published that I know of so go at your own discretion, good luck.

There is a reprint of a 2011 Handloader magazine article on the interweb, discussing 300 MP in a few revolver loads, including the .41.

Unfortunately there is more interest in muzzle velocity than accuracy. Useless.

Several years ago I did run across the use of .38-55 rifle loads using 300 MP. This was on the ASSRA forum. The accuracy was pretty impressive. There was a suggestion that magnum rifle primers should be used. Not sure how that relates to a revolver.

Take a look on Alliant Powders website I would think they would have data on there using 300 MP for the 41 magnum. From what I have heard from a reloader who uses 300 MP it doesn’t require a magnum pistol primer.

I checked the Alliant authored sites and no .41 info.

There is a Handloader article re-print that does include .41 info. Brian Pearce is the writer in this Oct.-Nov. 2011 article.

My reference for magnum primers was based on a RIFLE load used in a 200-yard BR match with cast bullets. The writer was very emphatic that the magnum primers be used.

Seems like an exercise in futility unless I get into “experimenting” a bit.
