300 PRC Cast Bullets

Good Day,

Has anyone tried casting and shooting cast bullets through the 300 PRC? I have a Howa 1500 with a 1:8.5 twist rate and am considering shooting it with cast bullets. I reviewed the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, which contains data for all the 30 cal magnum cartridges. Since the 300 Win Mag is close to the 300 PRC regarding case dimensions, I'm considering using its load data as an approximation. The only caveat is that the data for all the magnum cartridges in the handbook is 1:10 twist-rate barrels.

I'm looking forward to hearing your comments

Richard

I don’t know for certain but I think the difference in twist rate between 300 mag and 30 PRC will matter much. It may work in your favor with longer bullets if you shoot at subsonic speeds.

Sorry, half awake. I meant to say it won’t matter much. Also too spaced to try to use the edit feature.

Ron Knori shot a Ruger 77  in 300 Win at Clark rifles over 20 years ago.As I recall his groups were darn good and he hung in there in production class.I think he used 4759

If I understand you correctly, Ron used cast bullets.

Yes it was cast bullets  in  CBA matches. I'd Have to dig for my old magazines to get the data. It was about 1997 or 98

That's great to hear. Thank you very much for the prompt reply. I'll start with load development as soon as I've got the brass. I don't have a problem with primers since I have LRPs, LRMPs, and LPPs. I have about 850 LRPs and 700 LPPs. I'll try both, but I suspect the LRPs will work better with the relatively lower loads I'll develop.

Do you have a reference to the article or information? I work for a large South African university, and a while ago, I discovered that I could access magazines like American Rifleman via our electronic library.

Good shooting,

Richard
