30 caliber powder coat mold

I have been powder coating handgun bullets for a number of years and will never go back to lube. I haven’t been successful with rifle bullets because when the bore ride nose gets .002 larger they won’t chamber.

I am ready to purchase a custom mold, made undersized to accommodate the additional thickness of the powder coat. I want a .30 caliber mold in the 170 to 180 grain range to use with both .30-30 and .30-06. I am currently using a Lyman 311291.

Has anyone purchased a mold specifically for powder coating, and if so from whom and how did it work out?  Can anyone make a recommendation?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Undersized nose seems to be a common complaint for bore riding bullet molds. Maybe you could post a buy/trade thread for a mold with a 0.298 nose and try that before ordering a custom mold. I have a four cavity Lyman 311284U (undersized) that I inherited and have never used. I also have some bullets cast from that mold. I can measure the bullet noses and let you know what their diameter is if you would be interested. It's a heavier bullet that what you are looking for but they might work for a proof of concept test.

If a custom mold is what you want someone like Accurate Molds would be your best bet.

  • If you're not adverse to plain base I have this NOE mold that's supposedly set up for powder coating. I might have tried it once. Since you're a CBA member I could mail it out for you to try for the price that usps charges. If you like it it'll be 65 bucks, if not just mail it back.
