Several years ago I had Hensley & Gibbs make me a custom 4 cavity mould. It is a replica of the original .44-40 WCF bullet. Weight about 205 Grains from Whl Wts and drops from the mould about .430” diameter. Shot it a lot in cowboy action matches, real accurate in .44 SPL revolver with 5.0 grains of WW-231..
One day I broke down and bought a Marlin Century Limited in 44-40 with ballard rifling. You know, just one of those things I could not help doing. In W-W brass, 7.2 grains WW-231, WLP, this bullet would shoot one ragged hole at 50 yards and it was almost like magic how it would shoot trick shots like splitting the bullet on an axe blade, cutting string etc.
I kinda felt guilty banging that Century Limited around at Cowboy Matches so I bought a UBERTI Yellow Boy in 44-40 at Winter Range and took it home. I dropped the powder Charge to 7.0 Grains and the same bullet. Boy, this thunderstick really shot well. One afternoon I was out shooting 200 yards and just for grins sent off three rounds at 200 yards from the Uberti. Two bullet holes were touching and the third was about three inches to the right. Not bad at 200 yards for a short range rifle.
It is the Indian, not the bow or the arrow that decides where the arrow strikes.
