1903 Springfield Magazine Follower Problem

I need some help from someone with 1903 Springfield experience. I have a Remington made 1903, serial number 333xxxx. I belive it was manufactured in early 1942. It is in an aftermarket sporter stock. When I got it it had a machined magazine follower, which I believe is correct for this rifle. It fed fine except for the last round which would either jam up on the side of the receiver or get thrown from the action before it could be fed. The follower always ended up cocked crooked in the action when the magazine was empty. It was crooked enough that the bolt would not catch on the follower. In an attempt to fix it I got a later sheet metal follower to use instead. It still ends up crooked when the magazine is empty, but it does manage to feed the last round.

The spring appears to be okay and hold the follower level. It does not appear that the follower is hanging up on anything inside the magazine. The rifle functions, except for holding the bolt open, but I would like to fix it and ideally use the machined follower if I could. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this issue?

It sounds like someone put in a different follower. My ‘42 03A3 Springfield had a stamped follower.

You did not say if the bottom metal is stamped sheet metal or forged metal.

Most common problem is that the magazine assembly is too far away from the bottom of the action. It should almost touch, about 0.015". Solution is to sink the magazine deeper into the sporter stock.

Second is the stamped sheet metal magazine's rear lip is bent and not located into the back of the action.

Another is the magazine spring is weak and not pushing the follower up against the bottom of the action.

Lastly, the action has been modified to feed 300 Win Mag cases.

Ask away for anything else.

Your Remington model 1903 receiver was made between November 1941 and September 1942 when 03A3 production started at #3348086.

The bottom metal is forged, not stamped. It comes right up to the bottom of the action, but I'm not sure what the clearance is, I'll have to check. I had thought about trying a new spring to see if that will fix it. I'll check the positioning of the bottom metal with respect to the receiver first.

I have a custom sporter 35 Whelen build on a Springfield 03 action and it did the same thing that you described. I put another machined follower from another 1903 in it and it's perfect now. The one I had in the custom rifle I put in the donor Springfied and it works fine. Go figure.

Roy Dunlap, the guy who wrote a couple of gunsmith books, was an ordinance sergeant in WW2. His position was that the forged followers were much more critical for fitment than the stamped 03A3 followers. Not my position, just stating someone else.

" It is in an aftermarket sporter stock."

Is the trigger guard/magazine housing original?  Or is it an after market part w/o the magazine well?

As mentioned, the most common cause of your problem is the magazine well is not butted up against the bottom of the receiver as intended.  The solution is to re-inlet either the barreled action or the trigger guard correctly.  Make sure the rear pillar for the rear action screw is used.

Some after market stocks, especially the synthetic molded ones had molded in mag wells.  Many times they were too large causing your problem.  Solution there is to find or fabricate a metal mag well to fit.

A couple pictures of the stock and trigger guard/magazine assembly would help us to evaluate the problem better.

The bottom metal/magazine are original 1903 parts. This rifle was one of the early pre-03A3 Remington manufacture 1903s.

Good, then when installed in the stock does the top of the magazine well come up against the bottom of the of the receiver or within a whisker hair of it?

Have you tried replacing the follower and spring,  Parts are readily available from places like Numrich and Sarco and probably others as well.  Had a similar problem on an A3 and a new spring and follower fixed it.

The top of the magazine well is in contact or very close to the receiver.

As mentored in the original post, I did try a stamped follower in place of the original machined one and there was improvement. I will get a new spring and try that next.

You are looking for one with the edges of bends sharply turned, and not with round loops like bent around a mandrel. Also, they only fit one way, as you know.

that reminds of a sporterized1903 i rebarreled a year ago .... my customer had acquired the action used but had to buy a new magazine spring before it fed correctly .... he said the bottom piece of the z spring did not fit correctly into the floorplate.  the new/used spring fixed the problem .. sorry that is all I know.  maybe some bad aftermarket springs were out there.  or 1903 springs not the same as 03A3 springs... ?

reminds me of playing with hotrods ...   correct part A never fits into correct part B ... heh ...

Springs from Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal 1903 -1937, are not the same as Remington and contractors springs from 1941 - 1944.

I got a new magazine spring and that has fixed the problem! The magazine now feeds properly with both the forged follower and the stamped follower and locks the bolt open on an empty magazine add it should. When I compared the new spring to the old one or was obvious the old spring had had hard use! It was definitely a different shape.
