I have slugged my S&W K38 barrel but don't know how to measure it groove to groove because it has an uneven number of grooves, 5.  My micrometer measures land to groove which is not full diameter. How do you do it?

The drawing shows the proper way machinist's way to do it.

The simple “quick and dirty” way is to wrap the slug with one full revolution of Bond paper, measure over the wrap, and then subtract twice the thickness of the paper. Close enough.
