cast bullets in AR15 300 blackout? Anyone with experience or knowledge?

I have finally decided to build a black rifle.  When I read that they could be built around the .30 cal SKS round my thought went to a cast round.  Then I find this 300 blackout round which is designed for subsonic with a suppressor.  I have no interest in a suppressor but this round looks like the 300 Whisper.  This sounds like a cast bullet round to me.  I don't even know if the action will cycle a round nose pill.  Any help here?

The http://castbulletassoc.org/view_topic.php?id=11866&forum_id=78>Lee TL309-230-5R is a good place to start with cast for an AR15 in caliber 300 Blackout, Whisper or 7.62X39. The heavy bullet weight is important for cycling the action with the recommended light charges. Data for this cartridge at http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/>http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/ for a 230 gr bullet works well for the bullets from this Lee mold. There are many positive reports of this long ogive Lee bullet cycling well in semi-autos.  That is not a problem for this bullet. This bullet drops large from my mold at .313” in Lyman #2 Alloy.

I use the http://castbulletassoc.org/view_topic.php?id=11866&forum_id=78>Lee TL309-230-5R  subsonic is a single shot 7.62X39 rifle with 1"@ 50 yard accuracy using H TiteGoup and like the bullet in #2 alloy, tumble lubed lightly before and after sizing/checking at .312” for my Remington Spartan Rifle.

Thanks Onadaga, good info. I did check out the hodgon site but the load data looks to be for jacketed pills. Good reference though. N Tonawanda Brings back memories. In the early 60's I lived in Northern New Jersey and my buddy and I found what we thought was the coolest rock and roll radio station on my tube radio. we could only get WKBW at night when the atmospherics were good. Joey Renolds and his “Burn Buffalo Burn” HA. Good info and a good memory.

All of the START level loads at Hodgdon for the 230 gr/Blackout are safe for cast bullet use. You can experiment beyond that. If you start with Lyman #2 and gas checks on the Lee bullet you can very likely go as far as the Hodgdon loads go. You won't get near that far with a soft alloy like Clip-on Wheelweight.

I  shoot this bullet both subsonic and at 1950 fps in different cartridges.

The old KB rocked, I knew Joey well enough personally to have had pizza with him and did several times at Casa Di Pizza on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo.

i admire the ar as a mechanism ...but i have never quite accepted the idea of a controlled gas leak into the action, blowing the bolt back for the next cycle ...now what WOULD get me interested is if somebody offered a kit with a short stroke piston action ... as per ruger or stag arms ... but as a kit .. i keep urging my buddies to spring for the $2K for the ruger 7.62 ... so i could shoot it ....but so far no joy ...

keep us informed of your progress, i might yet weaken ... can you get a decent trigger for the kits yet ?

I've shot both a CMNG AR and a custom built upper with LW barrel in the 300. Two MP molds in 130 gr. and 150 gr. functioned both rifles quite well and shot in1.5 MOA out of  both with a WW296 loading. They run fine with normal loadings. I know nothing of how they perform with sub sonic loads.

Lead bullets in the AR platform are doable with just about ANY weight of projectile. 155 and 200 for my 1-10.

1680 is a good powder to try.  I have had success with cast in a bolt gun.  Its best with the heavier bullets.Jim

I have done some work with 8 twist 300 BO in AR.First one is an upper with carbine length gas system.One of my favorite 30 cals- the 311299 cast in 9+1 ww/linofeeds just fine thru the mag and action. And functions the rifle.Am now going to try the NOE  311-247 AND, it will be in a new upper on way with pistol length gas port.Will report laterbeltfed/arnie
