03 Springfield scope mount question

Hello friends,

I have a question about mounting a scope on my 03 Springfield.  If it were a straight forward install it would be one thing.  But I have a soft spot for bubba'ed rifles and lost dogs so I have brought home a few of each over the years.

My particular rifle has some holes already drilled but it looks like they stopped before they were done.  Two holes are drilled and tapped and a third looks like the tap may be broken off inside.  I am leaning towards a picatinny rail made by EGW that has 2 holes in the rear and 2 holes in the front.  I know it will end up looking like swiss cheese but my rifles are field guns.

Could you guys please look over the photo and tell me what you think?  Any input would be appreciated.

Looks like you will need two holes at the back end instead of a single one. I don't expect the single hole that is there will line up with either of the holes on your rail, and drilling two more in the real-estate that is left might be tricky. A two piece scope base might allow you to reuse the existing hole.

The rear hole in the front receiver ring is in the wrong place.  It is where the left locking lug on the bolt locks into the receiver and is the hardest.  Probably why the tap is broken off there.  I would line up the rear hole in the front of the base with the front hole in the front receiver ring and lock it into place with a screw.  T

hen scribe the receiver through the front base hole, remove the base and D&T one additional hole there. That takes care of the front end.

Then I would drill a new rear screw hole in the rear of the base lined up with that one hole in the rear receiver ring.  That should do it.

I think EGW sells blank mounts and if so take one and your rifle to a competent machine shop. They can trace the holes and match the base to them. No need of putting more holes in the action than is necessary, good luck.

What's done is done, and Larry's suggestion makes the most sense to me. Personally if I saw an abomination like that I would've left it lay, nostalgia be darned because I think a Picatinny rail on an '03 sporter looks way out of place, but that's me.

Plug the holes with filler screws and put the Lyman 48 sight back in the base.

Ugh! What a shame to see this butchering.

With rifle in hand, I confidently go forth into the darkness.

Yep, that was me from 1975 though about 1990, when you could buy '03 and A3's for a lot less than a hundred bucks with bad barrels. I would buy surplus new two groove barrels for less than $25 per dozen, rebarrel, D&T and Herter's stock and make $100 on each one.

Then when the collectors discovered that there were not going to be any more of them, I had a footlocker of new or lightly used parts. So helped a lot of guys restore and upgrade their rifles. Made more on selling parts from 1990 through 2010 than I did on bubbaing them.

I would also suggest a 2 piece mount set because the pic rail is going to make loading a PITA. You can lay it on there and check but that is why all of mine are 2 piece ones.

Yeah that's how I ended up with this one.  I found it for sale cheap with a ratty stock.  It did have the Redfield peep sight on it.

I shot it for several years with the stock barrel then last year I had it re-barrelled with a new Criterion barrel.  It shoots so well now that I want to scope it.  I have a Bell and Carlson synthetic stock for it.

Thanks to every one for their input.  I am leaning towards the EGW pic rail that is undrilled so I can ask a gunsmith to complete it.

Although I do have a set of Weaver mounts front and rear already. (2 piece)  I was just trying to get more opinions.
