MRNT Friday Fun shoots report by Scott Ingle.

The Military Nationals at Hawkeye traditionally have some shoots on Friday afternoon to give everyone a chance for some relaxed competition and a chance to socialize and make new friends.  This year Friday fell on June 6th so some kind of commerative shoot certainly seemed in order. We decided on a 3 gun match with the M1 Garand at 100, the M1 carbine at 50 yards and the 1911 pistol at 25 offhand. It was 10 shots on the TQ4 target for each weapon totaling 300 points. No sighters were allowed (who gets those on D Day) but re-entries were permitted.

Top Garand shooter was Mike Kastning with a 97-5X.

Top carbine shooter was Glenn Latham with a 95-4X.

Top 1911 shooter was Scott Ingle with a 72.

Overall aggregates were very tight this time.

Mike Kastning posted a 238-5X for 1st place.

   Duane Nelson was 2nd with a 236-3X

Matt Hatterman and  Tim Horken tied for 3rd with 231-2X

We also have the Crazy Carcano Carbine Competition and Duane Nelson wins with a 156.

Caleb Duncan and Scott Ingle had their 2nd AR15 grudge match of 20 rounds of 5.56 at 100 yds.

Caleb narrowed the gap with a 187-3X but Scott put together a 190-9X for the win.

John Carlson used his Ruger AR15 in 223 to post a 196-4x at 100 and 197-4X at 200 to set a new club record for Modern Sporting Rifles in the scoped class with a 393-8X. Congratulations to John on an impressive job.

There was a good chance for others to practice and sight rifles in for the weekend.

The most unusual event was when 7 or 8 people on the line started firing away with their 1911 semiautos in the 3 gun match. We don't usually get to hear fairly rapid  semiautomatic fire at a CBA event and it was rather impressive. Quickly followed by complaints that 25 yards was a long ways for a 1911. Now we know why carbines were a good idea. Overall, it was wonderful way to kick off a great weekend match.

The 2025 Military Rifle National Tournament was held June 7/8 at the Hawkeye Rifle and Pistol Club in Sioux City, Iowa. Once again the Hawkeye crew led by Mike Kastning and Duane Nelson put on an exemplary event. Scott Ingle again organized the Friday fun shoots with a few new twists. Once again we found some excellent local cuisine on which a few of us may have overindulged just a little bit,

There were 22 competitors this year with six of those competing in two classes, continuing our growth over the previous year.

Saturday weather was quite benign by Hawkeye standards starting with a light breeze that stayed pretty consistent. As the day progressed a few of us did get caught by some unanticipated gusts. Sunday was a different story starting out with a fairly docile breeze growing to a full on 30 mph wind rolling over the berm by the afternoon. The phrase “I didn’t see that one coming” was heard frequently.

The competition provided the usual close breakdowns. In one case the score medal award used the X count to break a three way tie. In another there ere only three points difference between first place and fourth place. In one class the five shot group difference between gold and bronze was .030. A lot of folks went home thinking “I was just that close!”.

Congratulations are in order for the class champions as follows:

Big Bore: Dan Hudson

Issue: Glen Latham

Mod Iron: Randall Duncan

Mod Scope: Bob Haufschild

Offhand: Scott Ingle.

Thanks to all who came and made this a most enjoyable time and I look forward to seeing you again next year.

John Carlson. CBA Director of Military Competition.
