Which Firearms Software is Better?

The recent hurricane and flood got me to thinking that I need to put my gun collection onto a thumb drive so I can have it with other important things that are easy to carry. So I am looking at the "NM Collector" & My Gun DB" software. I have the demo versions to look at, but would like some imput if you have experience with either one or another.

I don't have an answer for you, but I, too, am VERY interested in the answer, my self. Hopefully, someone will help both of us134.

If I don't get any responses, I will let you know after I have evaluated them. So far the biggest difference is that My Gun DB is geared strictly to firearms and NM Collector can be used for everything from firearms to knives, household items, coins, recipes and much more. Both can be used for ammo, including reloading data, I think.

.... i keep most everything in a database titled * inventory * ... i set mine up in _filemaker_ but there are probably a thousand inventory templates ready to go on the net for microsoft ( or open office )  .  

the search functions in the new DB are amazing ... so you don't need a field for every little fact ... the searcher can find details within one big note page , to keep things simple .  i would have a separate field for "" item type "" ( gun, shoes, bullets, recipies ... ) ... and a separate field for a 6 digit id number to ease confusion of similar items .

For anything but a large collection, an inventory template in Excel is the inexpensive way to go. Be sure the pictures are high quality and show all sides with close-ups so an insurance adjuster can see everything. For a large collection chose one of the programs mentioned here.

For any data base you will want to have a copy of the file kept elsewhere in case of a fire or other tragedy. A bank storage box is ideal, but a relative or friends house will work. I am still working so a copy is at my office.  Remember to update the copy periodically. Do not send updates by E-mail even though it would be convenient. I would also avoid cloud storage as security is questionable as well as volatile.

.... just a note on bank safe deposit boxes ..... in case of your sudden death , a non-signature ( kids ) might have a hard time accessing the contents .... check with your bank in your state to verify this .  

if you use a thumb drive, don't use the very cheapest ; i have had no problems with _sandisk _ .  in any case, use a new thumb drive every few backups, date them and keep the last 2 or 3 .

fwiw i keep all the data files ( folders ) ... including photos .... in my computer in a file ( folder ), called "" backmeup "" ... then i just plug in a thumbdrive, copy "" backmeup "" and paste it into my thumbdrive ...  20 gig takes half an hour .  replace files with same names , don't skip them .

just some trivia .
