I am working with an All Story  borchardt in .30-40  Krag.  So far, I have used H4227 &  Rel.7.   Cast bullets in weights from 170gr.-200gr.  The Rel.7, while accurate,  has a bit more muzzle blast & recoil than H4227...probably because of it,'s slower burn rate.  Lyman lists H4227 with a burn rate of 54 & Viht. 130 at 56.  Has anyone used this powder in .30 castloads?

Hello .22-10-45.

I drool at the thought of your rifle. Sorry I can't help with loads. To show what an old died in the past codger, that I am, I don''t  even have a load book with Vihtavuori powder info in them. I don't know what your rate of twist is, but I have a Model 95 Winchester in 30-40 and it prefers the heavier bullets. Reloader 7 is my favorite powder in the larger bores such as .358 and .375. I'm shortly going to be reloading some 30-30 and .308 cast loads with Reloader 7. Good luck with your loads and new rifle.

I shoot a 3040Krag No.3 Ruger, Cast Bullet Silhouette

Reloder 7, 311299, NOE copy, will maintain accuracy out to 500M, holding the rifle right...I use Unique out to the Turkeys, using RCBS 30-180-SP,

I  had 4 pounds of VV N130, used 2 pounds, and the third when opened at the range the smell almost got me, dumped it on the ground, all of the powder had a different date and number, the last pound I have is 2.2.2011, I have used it in my 30-30, 38-50 Rem, and 30-40 Krag, there are loads for this powder in the Lyman Cast Bullet Manual, 4th Edition, I used the .308W loads, the case capacity is close

18.0 grs , VV N130 seems to be well suited for my 38-50 Rem, 340 gr, PB bullet, shoots same point as a 60 grs, 1 1/2 OE

the most accurate load for both my 30-40Krags, Ruger and Martini with 2groove GI barrel, is 21-22 grs of Reloder 7, 30-180-sp RCBS, 11-12BHN bullets, BAC Lube

went back and read Mashburns post, I also have  a Browning/Maruko Model 1895, 30-40 Krag, local Sil Match out to 200yds, the 22 grains of Reloder 7, and the RCBS bullet has kept me in the winners circle, for the years I shot in the class, I put a tang sight on it, barrel sights and old guys don't work

Hello again,

Do you have any idea what velocity the Reloader 7 loads were in the 95 Winchester. I'm going to try that in my old 95.

Thanks,

Mashburn

I've used VV N-130 in the .308 with the RCBS 30-180-SP. The results were on a par with my Reloder #7 loads, very repeatable. If I did my part, the goups were minute-of-angle.

My experience with N-130, N-133 and N-135 has been good, just need to play a little bit to find the exact load. I did not follow up on N-130 because I was usiing Reloder #7 in .45-70, .30-'06 and .30-30. I bought Reloder #7 in 8-pound containers and it was handy.

sorry for taking long to get back, records were buried

21.7 grains of Aliant Reloder 7, RCBS 30-180-SP, Sized .311, Hornady GC, BAC lube, Fed  210GM primer, my notes indicate, 1730-1750, accurate, not much recoil

FWIW, The Browning/Maruko has a slightly different chamber than an original, there is a ramp cut into the bottom of the chamber, the original 35Win I have does not, this means there is not much support on the case base, be careful with the loads, if it is a Browning

Hello 4060may,

Thanks for the load information and my 95 is a real Winchester 95. I did not know that the Browning 95 copies had the feed ramp in the rear of the chamber at the bottom.

Thanks,
