David,

Guess what I found on my front porch this morning? (Courtesy of my wonderful Wife) The FedEx fairy brought me a toaster oven. I finally have one.

HOORAY! HOORAY! HOORAY!

Now I have to figure out what to do with it. Here's a picture courtesy of my wonderful Daughter.

Use it to powder coat bullets.

Use it for annealing bullets - bring to temp then slow cool.  All the bullets are then the same hardness.

Roger:  That little oven should do very nicely.  The convection feature is very important.  Make sure to use an accurate oven thermometer to calibrate the temperature setting as the dial on the front  of the oven is only "suggested retail price"  Very nice, almost too nice for the application.  Have fun with the new toy.  Gp

I can't contribute to what to do with your new toster oven but I can suggest what not to do with it.

I once had some damp powder and decided to dry it out in the wife's toaster oven. Don't ask me how I managed to get damp powder or how a fit of temporary insanity led me to think that was a good idea because I no longer have a clue. Being a Depression baby I can't let anything go to waste and I'm sure this drove me to the foolishness although I don't remember that either.  However, I do remember very clearly the results.

My wife was away so I put the powder in a shallow steel pan in her toaster oven and set the oven on 200F thinking that would be plenty low. In a tiny glimmer of intellegence I did take the oven out on the deck before turning it on.

Then I went downstairs to reload. I hadn't gotten much reloading done before I heard a loud WHUMPH. I found that most of the oven had moved backward a bit, the door had moved forward a lot. The powder was nowhere to be seen. All the toast crumbs that had dropped into the bottom had been efficiently removed.

The oven was not one with forced circulation. and the steel pan was directly above the heating element. i'm sure that radiant heat from the heating element quickly raised to temperature of the steel pan a LOT hotter than 200. Something anybody with an IQ higher than his waist size could have figured out before rather than after.

John,

I am not laughing at you, more like laughing with you. I was once cooking up a batch of rocket fuel on the kitchen stove and got a premature ignition that filled the entire house with smoke so thick you couldn't see 4 feet. Opened all the windows in dead of winter to air out the house. Wife was home at the time. Sucks to be me.

I can heartily sympathize with both of you.  Having done somewhat similarly foolish things in the past and lived to tell about it.

WOW !!!

I just can't figure out how to respond to these stories.

So I'll do the only intelligent thing I'm capable of;

Keep my mouth shut.

You could make kydex holsters and knife sheaths.  That's what mines for.  And French fries.

David,

I assume you have fired it up by now. I'm looking for one that will do and honest 450 F. so I can heat treat bullets. Have you ever tested it for max temp. Most of them are advertised to do 450 but I don't want to buy one that can't make it.

Tom,

My older Black & Decker toaster oven just did a batch of bullets at 485°F. It was controlled with a PID controller with the thermocouple over the element. The 100 bullets were in a 1/2x5x5 inch aluminum plate with the probe on the center of the plate. A previous test batch had the probe NOT centered over the element. At 485, I had to melt the bullets out of the plate because the probe didn't find the highest temperature (which was over the element).

My Wife's oven thermometer is very accurate, and the oaster Oven comes up to 400degrees and stays steady in about 10minutes.

The cookie sheet that came with it is kinda "fucokhta" as it has weird ridges to "reinforce" it. So I had to cut several sheets of foil to get an even surface to stand my bullets on.

But that won't be a problem any more. As My Mostest Wonderful Wife bought me 3 new cookie sheets that are a bit bigger and Flat Too. She'll buy me a 4th as soon as the store restocks them.

Only problem I got now, is I need to Cast more bullets to powder coat. My new N.O.E. Mold will help do that. 2 racks and 4 cookie sheets makes PC'ing go fast.

Just ordered .311 & .313 & .314 sizer's. So the first PC'ed bullets I load are going to be #311252 PC'ed J D Green for .32ACP and then .32 Short & Wimpy. Followed by the Lee # 311-93-1R PC'ed Carolina Blue in .32 S&W Long.

By that time I'll have cast up a bunch of N.O.E. #453-238-SWC from my Brand New Mold. I think I'll try Flame Red. In some .45 S&W cases. See how the New Vaquero likes them, along with the New FAT Walnut grips I just made for it.

BOY HOWDY !!!!! This is FUN.

Thanks Again for all those helpful comments.

Too Bad ya can't PC bullets on one cookie sheet/rack & bake cookies on the other. That would feed your sweet tooth & your Hobby at the same time.

Roger: Ditch the aluminum foil and have the wife pick You up some silicon baking sheets. They are much easier to stand bullets on and last a very long time. I PC lots of bullets and I haven't worn one out.  Gp

GP,

She bought me 3 rolls of non-stick foil. I better darn well use it up before I try anything else.

Do/can you wash the silicon baking sheets ?

Roger: I've never seen the need to clean the silicon mats and I've baked thousands of bullets on them.  Have the wife use the N/S aluminum foil for cookies and you'll win both ways!  Sooooo much easier to keep the bullets standing up on the mats. My daughter is part owner in a metal fabrication shop and they make me 1/4" aluminum plates that are the same size as the oven racks. Really makes a nice stable baking surface.. Gp

Gp,

That must be pretty slick, My Daughter runs a Bonding Office. Not much help there in the casting arena.

I just used my new N.O.E 5CAV Mold for the 1st time yesterday. I used a Lee 6cav too. Was just thinking it would be great to have an accessory plate assembly that screwed onto the bottom of the Lee mold halves to make it the same height as the N.O.E. , ARSENAL Molds. Would make for a better casting rhythm & help better heat control. Just 2 pieces of flat aluminum stock to screw onto the molds halves.

After my Wife buys the 4th perfect fit cookie sheet, I'll ask about the silicone mats. And we buy our Foil in huge roles from Costco. She made a special trip for that no-stick foil.

She bought the T.O. & cookie sheets & Foil. I don't wanna ask for anything else right now.

My Birthday comes up next month, I get a 12 Shoot Card from our local indoor range as a usual gift. Can't afford to rock the boat right now.
