The Accurate Rifle

Warren Page

1973, Copyright Winchester Press

Why read such an old book about jacketed bullets? It is the last and best “how to” shoot factory stocked rifles off the bench. Warren Page was a Harvard cum laude grad and the man can explain things for most people who can read, as he proved by being the shooting editor for Field & Stream for 24 years. Plus being a National Benchrest Champion nine times, Hunting Hall of Fame and other awards.

The CBA has many classes that require the shooter to use a non-benchrest stock. Shooting these from a tripod from rest is different from shooting with a 3 inch wide fore end. Shooting “free recoil” is very difficult with narrow stocks, so a different technique is required. A great couple of chapters on sight efficiency and scope requirements; the precision reloading is a little out of date, but the techniques for using L.E. Wilson tools still apply. The Gunsmithing parts are as good as anything you will read today.

Originally published by Winchester Press, it has been reprinted numbers of times and is available cheaply in paperback.

Good book. Some of the information will never go out of date.
