I have always been a little confused by the bullseye targets that have a bold square at the 12 o:clock position. I assumed that the purpose of the square was to provide a clean sight picture when shooting for group. Since scopes are usually used, it seems to me a circle or some other configuration would be better. I have never seen one of these targets in use and have the feeling I am missing something.

These old benchrest targets were designed 60+ years ago when scopes only had crosshairs or crosshairs and a Lee dot. If the target is hung square with the world and the benchrest adjusted to be square, the cross hairs squared the box. Where the bullets group in the circles is irrelevant.

Given the target is hung "square", some who had fine crosshairs, put the target square in one quadrant (Usually the upper right or left) with the crosshairs just touching the black of the square on the vertical and horizontal crosshairs. They felt that gave a finer, more precise aim point.

When I started serious competition, I was told that I could place shots in the box while holding the center of the circle. This would allow a clean target to aim in the circle while analyzing the shots in the box for the effects of wind.
The group only needs to be within target boundaries. Simple to do if you have good sight settings and a good zero.
I still use this methodology for load development. The clean circle is an aid for sighting as I have sometimes obliterated the center. A clean target is needed for a good sight picture.

Last season was the first time I fired a target for 'group size'. Then I learned that it does not matter 'where' the group falls. So, when I am shooting a scope with a 'dot' crosshair, I put the dot in the center of the circle. When firing a regular crosshair, I split the box as best I can. So far, it seems to work for me.
