Returning to the bench.

My son asked for advice as he is gearing up to reload for his handguns. I made a list for him as to what is needed. MidwayUSA had most of what he needed. I told him that the LEE Classic Turret Press is money well spent. Onondaga convinced me to buy one and I'm glad that I did! So, my sons' new found interest in reloading brought me back to the bench . . . And also to finish building the .40 Caliber flinter that I started years ago. I have about 40 lbs. Of ingots under the bench. Hmmmmmmm.

If someone else had of done to me what I did to myself . . . I'd have killed him. Humility is an asset. Heh - heh.

Glad to have you back into the circle. We are practically neighbors as the crow flies. Please consider shooting with us at Leetown and also starting a shoot at your club. I live in Maryland and would love to see a CBA to represent us.

Pigslayer;

The Lee Classic Turret press is not only the near perfect press for a new reloader (utility value, as well as really affordable for what you get - inexpensive turrets, etc). I have two Dillon 550's (one small and one large primer to expedite caliber changes) and have loaded TENS of thousands of both rifle and pistol, but have a Lee Cast Turret press for those experimental loads that I don't want to tie up my Dillons while experimenting. Yeah, I also have a couple of single stage presses (RCBS Rockchucker, etc). At any rate, for many, many years I have recommended the Lee Cast Turret for a new reloader.

The Cast Turret loads both rifle and pistol, near instant caliber changes, and a new loader can easily load single stage until they learn enough to use the full turret capability. When a loader gets up to speed, it will allow a person to load at a decent rate of production, etc. Many will never need more. For those that eventually need/want a full progressive press, it will always be useful on the bench in later years.

I have a single stage press and a Dillon square deal B.  Been thinking of getting a turret press, or another single stage - to set-up on the picnic table outside.

I have always believed in a good quality single stage press with compound linkage as the best way to start. It will allow you to learn at a slow pace and make the necessary mistakes easy to correct at that slow pace.

Hi Pat, it is good to see you back here.  Up until last Summer the only presses I had were a RCBS Jr. and a Dillon 550.  All I ever loaded on the Dillon was pistol.  I have done all my rifle loading on that RCBS Jr.for the last fifty years more or less.  I finally gave it to my neighbors son after teaching him how to use it.  He's a pretty good boy, and helps me out around here.

I think that we all should actively look for someone to teach reloading and bullet casting to.  Otherwise, we are going to look around one day and find that we are all alone.  Not a good thing in this political climate.

Take Care, Brodie

Well, my son received his new LEE Classic Cast Turret press along with everything else that he needed to start reloading. He cranked out a bunch of .45 ACP loads and started that they shoot really well! I asked him if he would want to start casting. He said; absolutely! So I told him that I have an extra Lyman #45 lubersizer w/heater and a LEE 10 lb. Casting furnace that I would give him. He is excited about that. So, I'm looking for advice as to what bullet would be appropriate for the .45 ACP? I'm a wheel gun guy & have little experience with autos. So, give me your thoughts/opinions!!!!!

I have a RCBS 230 round nose two cavity, blocks only say 50$ + 8$ shipping.  You would have to buy handles.

It's an excellent bullet, if the pistol is OK with jacketed RN it will feed the RCBS. Send me a PM.

Steve
