Is the Hornady delta rifle rest allowed to be used in the military bench rest cast bullet shoots? It is plastic and filled with sand. I do not think it is still being made. It is the only rest i own. Thanks, mike

More than welcome, as it is not as easy to use as most of the others.

The rule is that there be two rests, one fore and one aft, not connected and they be filled with sand. A trick is to use a heavy fine-grained sand. I bought my heavy fine sand at a pet store that was closing out. One other heavy sand is the black sand found at foundries.

There are even rests built on screw car jacks that are competitive. Both Ed Doonan and Bev Pinney set National Records using this type of rest.

From the CBA military rules:

(b) Sandbags - Shall be of one or more materials which can be easily flexed with the fingers before being filled with a non-metallic material similar to dry sand.

Hornady Delta Rifle Front Shooting Rest

You would need to add a sandbag between the rest and your forearm.  Other than that I don't see a problem.

I've had good results for forty years with the simple but heavy Hart pedestal rest and leather Protektor front bag and leather Protektor rear bunny bag, but I'm not sure if the Hart is still made.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Just a short note on the sand….

As John noted, SIMILAR to sand. If we polled the match shooters, I’m guessing 95% are using sand, but there are other “finger deformable” materials being used.

Regular dry “beach” sand weighs about 100 pounds per cubic foot, +/-. However, a different grade of sand, known as zircon sand, weighs about 170 pounds per cubic foot, +/-, much heavier than other varieties of sand. So yes, it is denser, but it helps to know its well known name when you go looking for it.

In the foundry/casting world, zircon sand gives a better exterior/interior finish to a casting, due partially to its grain size and shape. Years ago when Ford started with aluminum blacks for their cars @ their Windsor, Ontario plant, they switched to zircon sand. At the time, the Ford guy told me they would NEVER use aluminum for the F-150 pickup, because it was their best seller. I wonder if they ever switched over to aluminum?

In the CBA Traditional rifle match categories, a non-deformable, hard “sandbag”, is allowed only in Unrestricted Rifle or Pistol and Plain Base Rifle.

Is there a real need for anything other than regular sand ?

IMHO, there is if you are shooting a flat bottomed full benchrest stock and shooting free recoil. The denser sand holds its shape better and seems to make the recoil slide more consistent.  I tried it with my sporter and military rifles, but quit because it was just too heavy to carry up to the bench all the time.

I am with Ric. Regular sand works fine for sporter or military rifles. Everything I carry to the bench is heavier than it used to be for some reason, so I have little interest in something heavier.

Or, wait until you come to a match at Tamaqua as we discussed in another post and I will hook you up with some for free. They may have holes pasted over, but as long as the X dot is there you are good.

No, I'm not stalking you, just creeping around the forums when I should be working!
