My latest powder coat testing

I did a test a while back with 358156. I shot bullets powder coated and without gas checks at .38 Spl vel. and at .357 Mag vel.  I found accuracy to be equal to bullets that were checked and lubed.

I recently cast a batch of the RCBS 429 240 Sil. bullet and powder coated them without gas checks. These shot terrible, about 8" 50 yd. groups out of a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter with a 2X scope. I added gas checks and they are now shooting in the 2 1/2 to 3" range. This is equal to past experience with this bullet checked and lubed.

So I have one bullet that works well powder coated without the gas check and one that doesn't.

Your opinions and speculations are welcome.

I can only offer speculation.

When we omit the gas check, we sacrifice bearing surface. If the bullet has ample bearing surface in the first place, you might get away with it. I don’t have any experience with your bullets, but maybe there is a relevant difference in bearing surface?

My experience is accuracy is at least on par wth traditional methods and under certain circumstances, better.

Cheers from New Zealand

How much thread choke does the .44 have?

By thread choke I assume you mean the constriction where the barrel screws into the frame.  I don't feel any with a tight patch. I guess I should slug the bore, but the gun shoots under 2" at 50 yds with 429421 and 7 gr. 231, 10 gr. Unique, or 23 gr. 296.  I have lead lapped the constriction out of several Blackhawks, but this one seems to be good as it is.
