I read an article on accuracy on the angelfire.com website titled "Secrets of the Houston Warehouse". Very interesting, it covers a lot of the tricks used by benchrest shooters and other myths. Thought you all might find it interesting too.

Ross,

Thank you for staying on top of this. As I stated previously, I'm not sure if my replies or PM's are going through. Thus, I want not to be rude and let the poster(s) know I rcvd it.

I agree. I'm getting good answers.

Thanks, Bud. I replied elsewhere, but am challenged with this communication stuff. And I really could care less to learn it. Thus, the 2and reply, hoping you get at least one of them.

I just love my 7mm-08.

Thanks, Bud!

I needed this. I've got Rx7, 3031, H4895, most of the older shotgun propellant powders, SR4759 and 160 gr cast gas checked. That should get me started.

Pomona gun show, eh? I lived in good old San Berdoo near the south gate of Norton AFB when Chuck Yeager was CO, c. 1974. There was a lot of equipment flying flying in and out of Norton those days. For the flyers and military buffs, Jackie Cochran and husband Floyd Odlam lived in Indio, CA. Those, truly were the days.

Best wishes,

What is the range of A. velocities, B. bullet designs and, C. bullet weights you consider ideal for accuracy in the medium calibers? Specifically I shoot a 7mm-08.

Velocities from 1600 fps to 1800 fps.

Bullets: SAECO 073, RCBS 7mm-145-SIL, RCBS 7mm-168-SP and an experimental SAECO 150 grain mold bought at the Pomona Gun Show. Used Linotype, sized .285, Reloder #7, V-V N-135, Varget, Federal LR primers.

The SAECO 073 has been the most successful so far in my current rifle, but the rifle needs throating for the RCBS 7mm-168-SP to allow seating where the gascheck is in the neck. My previous Remington 700 Varminter was throated for the RCBS 7mm-168-SP and shot very well.

Your inquiry makes me want to get the 7mm-08 out again and work with it. I also have a Remington 788 set up for Heavy Rifle that I need to get out and start working with again.

I loaded practice rounds for a friend's 14-year old daughter's first year of deer hunting; the SAECO 073 with Reloder #7. She clobbered her deer the second morning out with jacketed reloads.

I agree, the Huston Warehouse piece is a very interesting read, so is the Lyman Cast Bullet piece.

My grand daughters Savage Axis in 7MM-08 really likes a Saeco 145gr bullet.

Load consists of 20 gr. 4198 with 1 gr. dacron filler.

The load chronographed right at 2000 fps.

CCI standard LR primer in Starline brass.

I think I found this load in the latest Lyman cast bullet.

Without any load development other than seating depth this load shoots ragged holes at 50 yd.

I agree with Ross, each gun has it's own sweet spot. It's a vibrational thing. One gun may come into tune at 1500fps, another might tale 2000+. The gun will tell you.

Elmer: I'm not sure how to answer your question. Each rifle is it's own "person" with individual preferences. 1500+- is a good place to start. I've gone thru many trials to find my loads and you will probably have to experiment also. I have zero experience with any 7mm cartridges, perhaps other members can help. I suggest you start by researching the CBA archives. Best of luck.

Howdy, Gents.

The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, 3rd Edition, 1980 has a nice article entitled:

Speaking "Frankly" The .30-'06' Is An Oldie, But a Goodie, Frank Marshall, Jr, pp. 92-93, reprinted by permission of the CBA, Inc., from the Fouling Shot, 8/79.

Mr. Marshall lists favorite loads with Lyman #311284 at 1600 fps as the ideal velocity.

What is the range of A. velocities, B. bullet designs and, C. bullet weights you consider ideal for accuracy in the medium calibers?

Specifically I shoot a 7mm-08.

Best wishes, Jack from PA

Yes, it has been floating around for over 20 years now. Precision Shooting published the whole series years ago. It is an eye opener for those who think five 5-shot targets are the final answer.
