The (10) round "group" is 5.710". But the "best" (7) is 3.480". Remeber, this was 200- meters/218-yards.

The rifle is a C. Sharps Model 74, chambered in .40 2 1/2 (40-70 Sharps Straight), Hoke rear and Baldwin front sight. The bullet is a 415-grain Brooks ddpp (dual diameter paper patch). Powder is 68-grains of Old Eyensford 1 1/2. Primer is a FC large pistol match. Cases are Hornady 405 Winchester.

Between each shot I wiped with 2 wet and 1 dry, followed by a pass with a chamber mop. Wiping solution is Ballistol but the previous solution was water soluble NAPA cutting oil combined with water. When I used that solution, at the end of post-shooting clean-up, I ran a patch with denatured alcohol through the barrel to displace any residual moisture. Cleaning solution is Butch's Bore Shine, BP flavor. At the very end, a patch of EZZOX is run through the bore and over the action, etc.

At the start I shot two rounds into the hill. Should have shot a few more. The first two of the required (10) rounds are up at the edge @ 120 but then things settled down. Did not move the sights since I was trying for group. Based on an article I read about target color, where darker blue was favored, is why the aiming center is blue.

Although my Paul Jones Money bullet (greaser) has done OK, my short time with pp bullets is convincing me to spend the summer using that bullet design. This rifle has never seen a jacketed bullet or smokeless powder and never will.

Only three shot the matches? It is not too late to turn in some targets. Hopefully we get some more shooters to keep this going. You all have a good day.

Greetings,

2 weeks ago we still had lots of bucked-up snow on the range, now it has cleared so I can shoot.

Both were shot at 200 yards (finally got some rounds that did not tumble).  I swabbed the barrel with a Hoppe's #9 dampened cloth between shots.  If I did not do this I could not get the cartridges to seat in the chamber and the rifling would imprint quite a bit into the bullet.  Barrel swabbed the cartridge loaded fine and no rifling imprint.

Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor, 45-70, 5 shots, 534 grain flat base bullet, no wad, 55 grains Goex FFG, CCI 200 primer, lateral 2.37 inch, vertical 5.72 inch with 5 inch outlier, CEP 6.06 inch.

Model 1884 Springfield Trapdoor, 45-70, 5 shots, 536 grain flat base bullet, no wad, 65 grains Goex FFG, CCI 200 primer, lateral 4.5 inch, vertical 6.5 inch, CEP 7.1 inch.  Interesting that I had one close set of 2 and one close set of 3 rounds.

I see some photos with 10 rounds, some with 5, any preference for the shoot?

With my new computer I will have to work as my old way of inserting will dot work.  When I hit the insert icon at the top of the add post bar I cannot get anything to happen in any of the three boxes.

Hope to get a lot more shooting in next week.

Either five shot or ten shot groups is fine. What ever you prefer. Again we want to make it as easy an not overburdened with "rules". We can see the methods being used and we can learn from others methods that  work for them.

Greetings,

Trying to load targets.

Hip Hip Hooray, they loaded this time.

I wasn't sure just where they would strike, so I used a blank roll of paper to see just where they would go.  The top group's right edge was on the lower left edge of the sighting target, 6 inch bull.  The lower group was just off the top left edge of the sighting target for the lower 3 shots.  Both groups would have gotten a caribou, but need refinement (or closer caribou).

Greetings,

Ken,

I think I need to go out of the programs and restart the computer to get the photo's to attach.  Last time I loaded the photo's, called up the forum, and tried to load the photo's.  Now I have been out of the programs and back in after being gone the weekend, and no problem loading.  Thank you all for your assistance.

Now, back to loading and then unloading at the range again.

Greetings,

Here are a set of photos from a 19 May excursion to the range.  All sets are 55 grains of FFG, CCI 200 primer, SPG, lubrisized, 1884 original Springfield Trapdoor in 45-70, original sights.

The 405 grain Hollow Base bullet gave marginal group at 100 yards. at 200 yards the sighting round was good, then the next 5 were way left and off the paper.  WHAT?  My thought is maybe the sighter was from a prior loading but it was the same load data.  Oh well.....

Next was the 420 grain bullet at 100 yards.  Considering the gun is twice as old as I am I was not displeased; I would have gotten a caribou.  This is about as good as I have gotten with this gun and bullet combination; considering the gun is twice as old as I am I am pleased.

And he 534 grain bullet.  All in all it would work hunting at 100 yards.  My 200 yard target the other day was better considering the yardage.

One thing I need to add is that all of the targets were place well above and slightly left of the sighting bull.  The 100 yard distance puts the bullets quite high but the 200 yard targets were pretty well correct for elevation.  Windage needs adjusting slightly, but that can be done mechanically.
