Hello to all,

I have one question. Can anyone out there tell me if the bolt shroud on O3 Springfields is Oil hardening or water hardening? I bet you that Ken and Ricin can answer this. Thanks in advance.

Everything up to 1940 was oil hardened, but in several ways. Plus the pre-1920ish were of one material, then another until about 1934 when they went to the SAE numbering system, and WW2 contractors and sub contractors varied. I have all the numbers if they are important and will look them up for you.

Up until they went to the parkerized finish in 1919/1920 they were carbonized, heated then dropped into linseed oil and aged 24 hours. Parkerized were oil quenched, sand blasted and then finished. Or for Sales rifles, polished and rust blued. WW2 were only tested by lot for surface hardness.

Let me know if there is anymore I could add.

Hello Ricin,

Thanks for your quick response. I have a lot of information on O3's but I don't think that I have all of the hardening procedures that you mentioned. I have two O3 rifles and I haven't decided which one that I am going to put the swing safety on. One is quite early and the other is much later. I happen to have that book out at the present time. I will look and see if I can find that info. and If I can't I'll ask for more help.

Thanks,

Mashburn

I think I have every book from the 1917 bid proposal by Fred Colvin and Ethan Viall to  the complete series by Clark Campbell.
