Lead Bullets in California

I have a friend who is moving from the East to southern California.  With all the scare hype in the American Rifleman and other places  about the horrors in California, he is worried that he won't be able to shoot cast bullets.

I believe bullets containing lead are banned for hunting in parts, or all, of CA but have never heard that lead bullets are banned for target shooting. Until recently there were regularly scheduled CBA matches in CA which are not now available due to things other than being against the law.

I would appreciate any information about legal restrictions on lead bullets for target shooting in CA.  Thanks.

Nothing that the bunch of idiots that run the state does anymore could surprise me.  That is why I left.

When I married my second wife I said: "Get me out of this S### hole.", and I meant it.  We moved to Arizona 21 years ago and we have not regretted it one bit.

I go through a personality change every time I drive across the border to see my kids.  Thank heavens one of them is moving to Maine.  I guess he could not get far enough away from CA.

As far as myself and good number of others are concerned ALL of the New England states suck, Maryland, VA, NC, GA, ILL, Wisconsin, Minn, Denver, Co, Orgon, Washington.  Maine is a beautiful state, but they are pushing gun laws big time.  Conn is about the worse in the New England states.

What most conservatives in good states complain about is Californains moving to their state and bringing their CA politics with them and it DOES happen. Not saying you did.

There was a bill proposed as an amendment to existing laws about hunting with non-lead bullets which would have banned lead bullets at "sporting shooting ranges." i.e. any shooting ranges. The bill didn't get very far as other pandemic, liberal, legislative issues pre-empted it. I have not seen any reaction on the part of either the California Rifle and Pistol Association or the NRA. But, once exposed, I'm sure it will be back.

Ian, Bismuth is still a heavy metal and all heavy metals, to a degree, are poisonous.  Read this about Bismuth:

California's Fish and Wildlife knows this and it's going to a no go for them. Now if you're doing do to find a replace for the diminishing lead supply for us caster, then that's a different thing.  Probably more expensive too!

I would be extremely careful with any attempt to use cast bullets.  The regulations state one should carry proof of Commiefornia lead free certification.  Not having "certified" ammunition can result in the confiscation of ammunition for analysis by the state.  The State recently changed the name of the Department of Fish and Game to the Department of Fish and Wildlife.  I am sure there are some gems in the department, however, the ones I have met recently seem to view hunters as criminals.

Have any of you actually had an encounter with an agent while using homemade non-lead cast bullets?

I'm interested in learning about that solution.

If he wants to hunt with cast bullets there's a solution for that, too.

Currently, lead is only banned for hunting.  They were suggesting a bill that would ban all lead but it didn't pass.  The Yo-yo who proposed the bill said "Lead free ammo is easy to obtain".  Really!  Where do I get lead free 32-20?  He didn't understand that there are a few more types of ammo besides NATO calibers.  Where is your friend moving in SoCal?  If he is local to me (Orange County) I could help him adjust to the asylum.

It will probably be death from small cuts. First, game then indoor ranges, then all lead and finally get rid of the pesky guns. None except the hunting are on the books currently, but the rumble is out there.

The way I read their statute, it only bans bullets made of or containing lead from being used while hunting any game animal or bird.
