Imperial Die Wax Substitute

I was changing the diaper on my 10 month old grandson (yes it's a messy job, but someone has to do it and I've had plenty of experience with three kids and now six grandkids) and saw this stuff in the diaper bag. When I opened it, I thought this is Imperial with a different name. Tried it and it works the same! Best thing is the it is about $13 for a 2 oz. tin vs $10 for a 1 oz. Imperial tin. So I traded my daughter with a container of Boudreaux" Butt Paste (worked great on them when they were little), and now the Better Baby Bottom is on my reloading bench.

Here's the bad news, it comes from BC, Canada and is hard to find right now because of covid. Good news though for our Canadian members. Normally Amazon has it, but you might find it elsewhere on the net.

Lots of options if you enter the above name on Amazon:  baby bottom better diaper salve.  OTOH Aquafor, which is also listed can be found pretty commonly in most pharmacies, supermarket pharmacies.

I started using Imperial when it first came out, great stuff but I switched to Hornady Unique wax for nearly all my sizing. Midway has the 4 oz tub for around 7.00. By the way if you do any heavy reforming cases the Hornady One Shot sizing wax is good, it puts me in mind of the old Red Rooster HD forming wax.. A 2 oz can is 6.00.

I started handloading in 1965 and used Vicks' VapoRub for sizing brass. It worked fine and I used it for several years before trying a regular case sizing lube. Vaseline also works well. I've never used one of these for heavy case forming but they may be okay for that, too. Imperial is my favorite, but I can't really say it's better than many others.

The problem I have with the Hornady tub stuff and things like the Kiwi conditioning oil is they are soft compared to the Imperial wax and like stuff. Imperial is at it's best because not only it works so well, it's takes a minute amount and leaves so little residue making it very easy to wipe off.

SO - what is in Imperial, and has anyone tried to replicate it or come close?

I don't know, but it takes so little it is very economical. The Baby Bottom Better seems like the same stuff just different color. Both work identical.

It's proprietary so tough to find even on a MSDS sheet.  I think that you will find a petroleum products in it.

I always thought sizing lube = STP oil treatment.  I'm talking about the clear, RCBS stuff.

Bought my first tin of Imperial Wax a year or so ago and I really like it.

Well,

as a result of these comments, I dropped by Bass Pro and bought a container of Hornady Unique for $7.99 + tax. Since I am shooting only handguns these days it will probably be a lifetime supply. I was nearly out of Imperial so the comments were timely.

Good to know should I ever run out of Imperial. With four tins of it on hand, and judging by how long it lasts, I may well be stocked up for the long haul!
