Great Late Night Phone Call

If you remember several months ago I posted about a new rifle that I had purchased. It was a custom heavy barrel Martini Cadet chambered in .17 Ackley Bee. I made some form dies and fire formed some cases but without having any loading dies, I had set the rifle aside. I was planning on making some loading dies but got side tracked The man I bought it from said the man who he purchased it from was also the builder. He had told my friend that he had dies for the rifle. When I made my final purchase price offer, I didn't figure that the dies would ever show up

Tonight, shortly before midnight, I received a phone call from my buddy that had sold me the rifle. We're both night owls if you wonder about the phone call time. Get this, the original owner had found the dies and mailed them to him. Not only dies , but loaded ammo and components. That is the first time anything like that ever happened to me on a gun deal. I was happy about the purchase price without the dies but man am I happy now. That was several months ago when I purchased the rifle and had forgotten all about that  there were dies that went with  the rifle,

Glad to hear it all came together, reloading die stories are almost as good as firearm stories.

One of my firearms addictions is Mannlicher-Schoenauers, have always loved the look and engineering. Came across a 1908 carbine in 8x56MS complete with the Lyman #36 pivoting peep sight. Made a deal and it's now in my house. Knew I'd probably find dies easily enough but was preparing myself for the price tag.

I met a fine older gentleman via the gunshop I worked at. Turns out he has the same addiction. Also turns out he had owned an 8x56MS at some point - and still had some RCBS dies "just laying around". He refused to take any more than $20.

He also had a beautiful 1950 M-S carbine in 7x57 - that's now "ahem" at my house too.....

"Well hell boys. I'd damn sight rather be hung by my friends than by a bunch'a damn strangers."

Hello Rum River,

I also admire the Mannlicher-Schoenauers that you are addicted to. I have always admired them but never have owned one. I have built a lot of rifles for myself and customers. For my use a sporting weight rifle should be stocked as such. I stock varmint and target rifles in the normal traditional style but for my personal use I use the Mannlicher style. I have a rifle under construction at the present time. It is a O3 Springfield action with a 7/57 shilen barrel in a light contour 18" long .I cut some material off the magazine box and shortened the trigger so that I could have a low slim contour at the action area. It feels real nice when you are carrying it in your hand and gripped around the action. I have fired it and it appears to be promising. I've got to get some other projects fiished so that I can get back on it. I have always felt that american Gunmakers have always put too much wood in gunstocks.

Thanks for your interest,

Mashburn
