Got a mold

I have a beat up Lyman #311332 2cav. One cavity has severe rust damage. Bullets come out with an added "lump" of metal about halfway up the bullet body.

Bullets from the other cavity come out just fine.

Should I fill both cavities and just discard the bad castings or fill just the good cavity ?

Thanks for your answers.

I fill one cavity when my mold is getting too hot. The empty side acts like a cooling fin on an air cooled engine.

My thought is you have a one-cavity mold. With a known bad cavity, you are wasting time when you are filling and rejecting .

I have a two cavity with on side converted to HP. When I need HP's, I don't even use the other one. Makes good bullets and works just fine.

Was thinking about maintaining enough heat in the mold for proper fill out of the good cavity

Your casting pace, especially on an older smaller block size Lyman mold, will dictate the mold temperature and good production. You can regulate mold temperature by pot temperature and by casting pace. The energy flow will not be that different and will stabilize after ten casts. The empty hole drawing the heat may stabilize the energy flow better. Treat it as a single cavity mold.
