I was recently given a pound of GOEX Cartridge black powder. I only shoot muzzle loading black powder rifles and muskets so I am giving it to a friend who uses black in his Trapdoor. Just out of curiosity I wonder what granulation cartridge is and why it is better for cartridges than any other black powder.

I shot the Cartridge grade in my two Shiloh Sharps (45/70 & 40/90 BN) years ago.  I have one of the little Mowrey ML rifles in .45.  It shoots a patched ball very accurately with 75 gr. of Cartridge and killed a couple of deer for me.  I still have several pounds of the stuff on hand.

GOEX Cartridge is between Fg and FFg, supposedly more carefully controlled in manufacture to be uniform in size.. Before Cartridge, some Black Powder Cartridge shooters sifted FFg to get more uniform ignition. I forget the details as to screen size. 

I went to Swiss 1 1/2 Fg when I could get it and 2 Fg when I could not get the 1 1/2 Fg. I once had two pounds of Curtis and Harvey 2 Fg when shot almost clean in the bore. That was over three decades ago.

Thanks for the kind words. After many years of competing with BPCR Silhouette, I settled on Swiss 1 1/2. Lot to lot Swiss was just flat a better black powder. It was more powerful and I got better velocity with Swiss. It was uniform and just a better black powder.

I shot both 40/65 and 45/70 at ranges up to 500 yards or 500 meters depending on the particular venue we were competing at. 

Then I lost the vision in my right eye and quit competing with long guns. However, when shooting my black powder  cartridge revolvers, Swiss did a better job with them, also.

I would happily use the Goex Cartridge up in your TD. 

i had very good accuracy in my TD with Cartridge under the 500 gr Govt bullet- Lynman 457125

Charge is whatever you can put in your brass and allow for about 0.25" compression, and room for the 

seating depth of the bullet.

Won some gong matches with that load.

IIRC, Cartridge is ~ 1-1/2Fg and may also be used in muzzleloaders larger than .50 caliber.

Dale53 might weigh-in and straighten me out; he has lots of BPCR experience.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to answer my question. As I stated, I don't shoot black powder cartridge but my experience with muzzleloaders goes back to 1966 and I totally agree that Swiss is superior to GOEX.

I have a Browning 1885 BPCR (made in japan) i wonder if it would be easy to sell at blue book value. I once shot a 1 inch group at 100 yards with this rifle open tang sights. Best accuracy was to run wet patch down barrel between every shot.

FWIW, I consider my ol' Browning 1885 BPCR to be one of the finest rifles I have owned, and I have owned a bunch. They were at the top of the food chain, as far as I was concerned! Mine was in 40/65 a dandy for BPCR Silhouette competition.

As a point of interest: GOEX no longer lists either cartridge grade or 1 1/2 F under the GOEX Brand. They do list 1 1/2 F under their OLDE EYNSFORD Brand, which is about $3 a pound more expensive.
