My rolling block arrived today. Looks good. Star rolling block, douglas premium barrel, nice soule sights, plain walnut sporting stock. twist is 1-16, bore is .311, and groove is .319. I have 100 38-55 brass resized to 32-40, just a little short. So, any help on bullet length-weight, diameter. Good starting charge and powder. I have 100 165 grainers from Buffalo arms @.3195. I eventually want to try breech seating.

Some where between 12-16 grains of IMR 4227 with a 165 is what i use when breach seating my 32-40 High Wall Schuetzen.

Here are two options for you, at NOE:

http://noebulletmolds.com/main/?product=321-185-rf

http://noebulletmolds.com/main/?product=323-188-rf

If your bore and groove are .311 x .319, You may have a Douglas barrel. Choose the .321 bullet. If a groove is .320, or smaller, the .321 bullet is best. If .321 or larger, the .323 bullet is the one that would be used.

This bullet is a direct copy of the 19th century Ideal 319323 bullet, that I designed from a original mold. It's call the French mold, original designed by W.H. French, a well known Schuetzen shooter of that era.

Frnkeore: Thanks, I just bought one yesterday from Swede himself. Their shop is about 60 miles from my house. I got it thursday and tomorrow (sat.) it's supposed to rain-snow-blow, so I'll hibernate in the garage and cast some 32's. The barrel is a douglas premium and the bore and chamber look pristine. The leade is large, goes from .327 tapering to .322 in front of the rifiling. Fired cases mic .325 id, and .340 od.

Am I wrong to think this rifle was chambered to be a breech seat?

Ross,

Most modern single shot rifles are made to be breech seated. I thought in your original post, that you wanted to breech seat it.

The basic (SAMMI) 32/40 chamber, isn't the best for fix ammo, anyway. The neck (again Sammi) has .007 taper. So, sizing it for fixed ammo, can be a challenge. A fixed chamber, would have no more than .002 taper, in that long neck. Most fixed chamber necks, have less taper than that. I make mine straight. But, with BSing, the neck and throat can be almost anything.

In BSing, you need to set the bullet, into the barrel, untill the lands (rifling) engrave, the base band, all the way through or no more than about .015, left un-engraved. The old rule of 1/16th ahead of the case (a 2.12 long case), might be a good place to to begin checking how much is engraved.

A good range to start load development, with 4227 is 14.5 gr and look for a good load, up to 15.0 gr, find a base, in that range, and then take it up another 1/2 gr to see if you can better it.

14.0 would be a good place to start with fixed. 296/H110, 300MP, Enforcer, are also excellent powders in that charge range too.

NOE's Stop Ring bullet can give good results, with minimal or w/o sizing. by minimal, I mean only 1/8" of the neck at base band diameter, giving a slip fit to the bullet. The SR will set the COAL.

I do want to breech seat and I appreciate the info. I was surprised by how much fixed ammo brass expanded compared to my 30-06 and my 45-70. You re-enforced my thought that this is a chamber designed for breech seating and that is how I will progress.

BTW: This breech seating is fun. In fact the 32-40 is fun period. But then some of you already know that. Did ok for the first try, 4 moa at 100yds with iron sights.
