Yes I do. That's what got me started in shooting at a very young age. As a boy we all shot on the police dept rifle teams against other departments. I shot on the Baltimore Co Police Dept team. I used to sling my Sears bolt action rifle and mount my sturdy steed (bicycle) to pedal my way down Eastern Ave to the PD indoor range near Essex. Nobody gave us a second notice back then. Today of course, black helicopters would be circling over anyone attempting that stunt. Clearly it would be a "domestic terrorist" now.

Got my first NRA certification of Marksman in 1964 whilst shooting on the school rifle team with a single-shot Remington bolt action rifle. The couch used to dole out 5 rounds to each of us while lying on an old mattress on the firing line. We would fire our prescribed rounds and await the call to pull our targets for scoring. We were taught that each shot counted and learned proper marksmanship principles which would serve me very well in the Corps years later.

My Dad and I would squirrel hunt with 22s when the opportunity arose. We hunted on Uncle Jake's farm in Western Maryland then before all the congestion arose. Jake's farm was on the old Mason/Dixon Line - literally. We used to have fun stepping across the line into Union land, then back into the Confederacy. Well now of course, Maryland is the "Peoples Republic of Maryland", not the state is was 50 years ago. I watched the Commonwealth of Virginia go all PC too. What a total shame to see how a few cities and concentrations of political beliefs change a whole state that is (was) mostly rural. Progress right?

Well the 22 factored large into my youth and is becoming more so in my later years. It's cheaper to shoot and easier to shoot. It tends to bring me back to the basics and always served in that role during my USMC years as well as in my competitive shooting years. A trip to the range with nothing more than a 22 for marksmanship sake alone. I would load two rounds in the magazine but treat it like a single shot. Rifle or pistol shot the same way. Sight alignment, sight picture, breath control, squeeze the trigger, call the shot.

CZ is making some fine 22s and I have had my eye on them for a while now. Thanks for showing us the rifle's potential when shot in a marksman's hands!

With rifle in hand, I confidently go forth into the darkness.

Grew up on a dairy farm with 22 bolt rifle in hand, solo from age 12. Hares, rabbits and unlucky quail if no one was watching. Had an allowance of x2 pkts of hi vel (total 100rds) a mth. Had to keep them out in the last week of a long mth lol. I wasn't the best shot..nor was the open sight rifle necessarily well set up for a youngster.. I learned it was harder to hit a rabbit at 25 paces than 50 (those sights). Also that one could empty the rifle at a stationary rabbit then it would hope away as you reloaded. Hares tend to circle after being flushed. Headshot quail are very tasty cooked over an open fire. Great memories.

Now I shoot a Toz bolt rifle suppressed with subs out to 110m. Scoped. Rabbits don't know what hit them.

Pat, no flies on that rifle, or the ammo! I don't think you'd gain anything with a new 457 MTR.

I worked swing shift back in the 80's and so got out to the range quite a bit in the mornings. Back then I came to the conclusion that under 50° it was just too cold to sit at the bench for a few hours! In the last few weeks I had some loads I really wanted to try, so braved some 40's weather and was quite comfortable. Of course back in the 80's I just had cotton long johns and jeans, and now I have hi-tech Bass Pro thermals and Thinsulate lined jeans. The new stuff must make a difference.

Glad to hear about people's experiences playing with 22s. Sometimes I think we forget how nice it is to get out and enjoy a day of shooting without all the hurdles of fighting a rifle or having to spend hours reloading, myself included. What I like about the CZ compared to other 22s I've owned is it feels like a real rifle. I was just browsing their site and the American looks like a pretty good gun. When I bought this thing years ago they made a military trainer rifle that really caught my eye and it was a toss up which one I'd buy. I chose this one because the military had a pretty good drop at the butt stock more useful for using iron sights. Guess it's a popular design in Europe. It was pretty cool looking though. Now I'm looking at one of those tuner things that slide on the barrel for some reason. Anyone have any experience with one? A regular tuner would be much better I imagine but the cost difference is substantial for something I don't know squat about. 10 bucks vs a lot more. It does interest me though. One thing that surprised my was I had my Garmin set up to record velocity and a good number of the CCI SV were going under 1000 fps and the ones over went no higher than 1030. I shot some Mini Mags and they clocked at around 1280 so I don't think the chrono was acting up, who knows.

On Jan 4, at Lincoln Gun Club, Merrill,WI , we will be shooting 22 rifles, Traditional (SS rife, Iron sights) or Modern (anything goes) from the WARM indoor clubhouse at 40 yds (offhand), then 100, 150, and 190 yds at gongs. Lots of different rifles shot. I shoot my BSA MKII Int'l with scope. Fun Match, for bragging rights. A number of people shoot CZ rifles, others Anschutz, Original Ballards, etc

There is an increasing interest in .22 Long Rifle matches at 50, 100 and 200 yards in the Pacific Northwest. The interest is among several groups; single shot falling block, target rifles with heavy and sporter weight barrels, and even classes for semi-automatic rifles with both factory and custom heavy barrels. The American Single shot Rifle Association has classes and maintains National Records for .22 Long Rifle at 100 and 200 yards.

Personally, I enjoy the challenge of the .22 Long Rifle at these ranges plus I'm not scrounging brass at the end of each relay. Sorting brands of ammunition by lot number gives a person the excuse to go to the range. Often a BSA Martini accompanies me to the range to warm up with before testing loads or practicing with the centerfire.

Have you ever tried to "follow thru" after pulling the trigger and watching 22 rimfire bullet impact target. It's pretty easy using lower velocity ammo such as heavy subsonic 22.

I have 5 .22 rifles, Remington 510, 511, and 512 (all scoped), a Winchester 74, and a 10/22. The 512 was my Christmas present in 1965 (I was 12), the 510 and 511 are more recent additions to complete the family. I have tricked out the 10/22 with a heavy barrel, a 3X9 scope, and a thumbhole stock. It shoots almost as good as the Remingtons. I shoot thru the winter any time the temperature is above 25 deg. The Remingtons are better in the winter, the 2 semi autos prefer warm summer days. I have never spent much time looking for each gun’s favorite ammo, CCI std. vel. works good in all of them. Any gun, a couple boxes of ammo and a target, or a hand full of clays and I’m good.

Math is hard. I was 11 in 1965.

I shoot thru the winter any time the temperature is above 25 deg.

When I was younger and a lot tougher shooting in the winter was no problem at all. Now that I'm 69 and turned into a sissy the cold goes right through me no matter what I have on. It's especially rough on my hands and it's a little hard to shoot with 2 pairs of gloves and a pair of mittens on.

I own a Remington 541 Target Heavy Barrel. Barrel is not free floated and very sensitive to the way you hold it when shooting Any kind of pressure twist on its wooden stock will cause inaccuracy. A light grip must be used for best accuracy. Bipod is out of the question (shotgun pattern)

If I read your measurements correctly, I got 0.579" or 1.18 MOA for an average of the 11 five shot groups with SV. Damn good for non-match ammo.

Sounds irritating.

Maybe a candidate for free floating? Or free floating all but back two inches. Or, at least, shim under receiver ring to get temporary free floating to see if free floating does any good. Easy to do and the results would make an interesting post.

I have to see what the CCI that comes in 50 round boxes does compared to the stuff that comes in the 100 round plastic containers. If I remember right it wasn't as good but that could be selective memory. The target I shot was with the stuff in the 100 round boxes. The target was shot with 2 different plastic boxes of ammo and I don't think it was from the same lot since they were bought from different places at least a year apart. I also just ordered one of those rubber gizmos that you slide up and down your barrel to supposedly tune it. It was only 7 bucks so the least I've ever spent on something shooting wise to experiment with. I'll see if it does anything at all and isn't just snake oil for fools like me to spend money on.

I have family and friends there, but would not like the life style; golf at 5 in the morning, bridge at noon, double the rent rates and triple the insurance? Plus it it full of old people!

Currently this is same ammo packaged two ways. CCI Part 0035 was originally intended for International sales where they have strict laws concerning plastic recycling.

Several years ago Federal Cartridge did manufacture some of the Part 0035 for CCI. It was a bit different than Part 0032 at that time. Federal used their components and loaded to a slightly higher velocity of 1100 fps. Linda

Thanks Glenn. Browsing the difference between the cardboard box and plastic SV ammo gave me a headache. I just don't understand why you can buy 100 rnds of the cardboard box stuff for 2 dollars or more less than 100 rnds of the plastic box. I can't see that box costing 2 bucks but who knows. I better just go back to shooting the gun for fun and relaxation and quit trying to think its all the sudden gonna turn into a BR rifle. I also have to stay away from that Rimfire Central. I was looking up threads about my 452 and 1/4 inch and under 50 yard groups were the norm. I wish people would start including all their groups and keep the outlier in their wallet to impress the kids at the local soda fountain.

I took the REM. 511 (fixed 4X scope) to the range yesterday. Temperature was 34 degrees F, no wind. CCI Standard Velocity, 50 round paper box, 500 round brick that I bought in 2023 and opened yesterday. 50 yard bench. Didn’t do so well, maybe this gun doesn’t like this lot of ammo. I shot 10 five shot groups, here are the best and worst. Average for the 10 was 2.56”.

Today I took the tricked out 10/22 (3 to 9 scope set on 9X) to the range. Same ammo, no wind, 32 degrees. 10 five shot groups, average was .63”

The interesting thing is that the 511 usually outshoots the 10/22. Now I have to get them all out and shoot them.

I don't know how tricked out your Ruger is Wayne but it shoots really well. Its nice to know I'm not the only nut who shoots in the winter or the only one who posts pictures of targets and results both good and bad.

Pat i: 1980’s vintage rifle that I traded into. I have added a Boyd’s thumbhole stock, a Green Mountain 20” bull barrel, a SIG 3-9 scope, and the new style magazine release. Everything inside is original. It was a fun project and is fun to shoot.

Wayne that sounds like a nice rifles. I put a Green Mountain barrel on my Ruger but went with a short fluted barrel, I regret it now. I've been thinking about trying to get a once a month 5 shot 8 group internet 50 yard aggregate BR 22 match going on here. Any target since it'll be for group, any gun or sights (maybe not full blown bench guns but even thats possible), post your target along with gun and ammo you used and measure your own groups and post them here. There'd be no prizes except bragging rights . In other words a laid back reason to spend some time at the bench with guns that have probably been neglected for years. Past experience shows these kind of matches never seem to last long but it might keep interest in shooting up until we can get back to shooting our cast bullet rifles. If there's any interest let me know and I'll start a thread.

Actually, you couldn't pay me to live there.

The older I get the less tolerant I am of the cold. That's all I was saying.

I'm OK here around St. Louis. Winters don't last long and summer is manageable. No hurricanes. I've only seen one funnel cloud in my 69+ years. When the Native Americans held sway this area was the heart of civilization. I can see why.

I've been shooting 22 BR matches for a few years here and many of the top shooters are using Eley Match (appx $15 a box). A few are using Eley Tenex (appx. $20 a box). Also very popular is Lapua Center-X (appx $15 a box). The Lapua is a lot harder to find than the Eley.

I started shooting the 50 yard matches with SK Std+ (appx $8 a box) and my scores were around 235-240 (out of 250). When I bought a brick of Lapua Center-X from a friend my scores went up into the mid to upper 240s. This is with my Ruger factory 10-22 T. I tried some Eley Match and it leaded the barrel. For some reason the 10-22 doesn't like the Eley lube, I guess. Also tried a cheaper Eley ammo (Club, appx $8 a box) and it leaded as well.

My experience is there is not one brand or type within a brand that is consistent. I'd look at what is winning and try that ammunition.

My current choice is SK Long Range for my BSA Martini Mk I. I tried it on a whim and it shoots well. Before this I was shooting Eley Ten-X. I shot the first clean 100-yard target at a Paul Bunyan match in Puyallup with the SK Long Range..

I ordered another 1500 rounds, got two lot numbers and one lot number did not shoot as well. This odd lot number shot better in my BSA Martini MK III. With rimfire, you have to experiment with lot numbers.

Here's my Remington 541Target Heavy Barrel. Rifle is very sensitive to how it is held when fired. Poor accuracy when resting forearm on sand bags. I may try to piller bed. Also what is a good target scope for close range target?

Some CBA members have bought Mueller scopes so I picked up their 8-32 to put on my 270, and I'm happy with it. It will focus down to 10 yards. They go on sale from time to time if you have the patience. Glenn

Also what is a good target scope for close range target? - Although I do not always follow my own advice, 30X is about all the power you need for up to 100 yards. I am currently shooting a 24X Redfield 3200 for 50 yards in .22 LR and 100-yard Quarter-Bore matches for CBA competition. The scopes are clear and offer a good field of view to see the wind flags. The lesser powers are easy to buy used as many shooters have abandoned them for higher powers.

I have Mueller 4 x 14 APV scopes on both my CZ and 10/22. The crosshairs are a little thicker than need be but it's clear and tracks well without breaking the bank. Might not be a Nightforce or Leopold but isn't in their price range either. The Vortex Crossfire II looks interesting too. Must be a bit of prejudice on my part but I just can't see spending a lot of money on a scope for a 22 rifle and the Mueller and Vortex are around 160 bucks or so which isn't too bad nowadays.

I've gotten wimpy because up until this year I did not care the weather.I would dress warm,bring the heaters out and shoot. I've been spending more of my time at the indoor range with handguns and air rifles as the weather turns.

I usually shoot 4 hours every Sunday starting at first light.In summer months I can start shooting at 5am and I cherish those relaxing shoots.

when I was obsessing with ARA bench, I had a Weaver 36, a B&L 36, and a Weaver T20 Micro Trac ... I settled on the " lower powered " T20 for the reason that in a long shoot of 200 round shoots I thought it was a good tradeoff of perhaps dropping a point or two from so little power ..... heh ... against my eyesight going blurry from chasing that 1 inch of depth of field of the 36x ... besides, the greater depth of field from the 20 allowed me to see the little slugs flying their merry way to the paper ...

so interesting when on those too often days when all three wind flags are blowing different directions you can see the little busy bee bullet darting to and fro to it's 50 yard destination.

I plan on talking about it in early April to see if there's interest and want to set it up so anything goes. Its just gonna be a fun thing to do to get people at a bench. It'll only be a 50 yard match and won't waste more than 50 rounds including foulers. We'll see if there's interest in April.
