CBE in Australia makes some very interesting and very heavy molds for slugs.  What they do not provide is any loading data.  Anyone have any loading data for these monsters?

Bradley, I was in the same boat as you when starting with the Paradox. I pulled a couple of H&H shells that I had bought in London and looked at how they were loaded. Then I sent a sample of their ammo to my friend at Ballistic Research for testing. That gave me a baseline for velocity and pressure in the factory loads. After a few discussions with Tom about it we settled on a starting load and make up of the initial test rounds. I loaded them and sent them off. From there some adjustments were made until the final load was worked out. Here is a sectioned factory cartridge a loaded round and the info on the factory box.

These are 2-1/2"  factory loads using a hard card over the powder with a thick cushion section then another hard card under the slug. Pmax for this ammo was 6,700 psi and 1070 fps average out of his test barrel. Somewhat slower than we expected. My load uses a plastic wad with the pedals cut and some filler wads but the velocity is the same and the pressure is slightly less. PM me and we can discuss load data off line. Best, Squid Boy

I have all of the CBE 12g molds.  Problem is that they are so heavy I cannot find any loading data.  The only reason I was interested in using black powder was the belief that I might be considerably less likely to get into pressure problems using it.  What I would really like to do is use regular powder but I have no way to locate loading data.

So how did you decide what power and charge to use?

Bradley, my apologies as maybe I led you off by accident. I thought the thread was for 12 gauge slugs and that is what I am talking about. The ones I am shooting are smokeless and loaded in shotgun hulls. Here is one of the first CBE hollow points reloaded into an H&H hull. Actually made by Cheddite.

Reloaded CBE

MP1886 is correct that if you are shooting BP in a TC maybe you should check with them first. I can say the CBE molds I have cast very fine bullets and the Paradox mold is no exception. Thanks, Squid Boy

Bradley you need to provide more information. What caliber is this TC barrel and how heavy are those CBE slugs you want to shoot. There is loading datat from TC for all their calibers, but with black powder or black powder substitute.  Their Maxi-ball for the 50 caliber weights 370 so that will give you a good start for loads maybe. Remember that the TC barrels were not made for smokeless powder.

My intention is to use a Thompson Center single shot stainless barrel that is 20 inches and has a rifles barrel.  What powder charge would you recommend?

I shoot a CBE 740 grain hollow point Paradox slug in my Manton Paradox and it shoots exceptionally well. You didn't mention it but I am not so sure how any of their slugs would work out of an unrifled barrel. Maybe attach the wad to the base like a Brenneke for some shuttlecock effect. I do have tested loads worked out for the Paradox. Good luck, Squid Boy

I would use the weight of a slug and match it up with a shot weight reload. Probably have to tweak the wads to make the package fit but anything is possible. For example the 730-950P is about 2.2 oz of shot (62 grams for the Metric crowd) Alliant only shows loads for the 12 gauge 3.5" shells for something that heavy. In Remington SP shells and SP wads they show that Blue Dot starts max at 38 grains.

Hopefully worth the smack down?

Dave
