My thermometer says it has warmed up to -8 F.

Being new to this forum and looking forward to casting for the first time is driving me nuts. This website is a tremendous source of info - so I'm more than ready to get rolling.

But 'cuz of the weather and a couple of other things I have to wait for a bit.

I don't like waiting.

Today a good friend and I are doing a gunshop road trip. With my luck I'll find several good deals on our usual loop and will be even more anxious to get active.

So unfair.

I'm going to check the thermometer again.....

And I thought the worst was when hairy end of the cow's tail froze into a five pound ball of ice and whatever and they hit you in the head with it breaking off pieces that fell into the milk bucket.

Winter is a lot like Justin Bieber. It was cute for a while now it can just go back to Canada. I had to use a pick to clean the barn yesterday.

One of the most demoralizing winter dairy farm disasters was whenever the manure spreader broke down while in the field during temps that were well below zero. By the time you forked out as much as you could by hand so much was frozen solid you had to thaw it out with a torpedo heater. Talk about a mess. Then the joyful task of repairing everything while laying underneath.

Ugh

Mashburn,

It's cold here again this morning as well. As you state, it's all what you're used to.

You mention taking care of the livestock back in the day, I can relate. Grew up as a fourth generation dairy farmer - was my livelihood for some time after. Livestock handling in bitter weather has to be lived, just telling the story doesn't always convey the experience.

"Try tieing a brick to their tail!"

LOL!

We knew a guy that actually did that!! Was fly season and he was tired of getting smacked with a dirty tail. (For those unfamiliar, a dairy cow lying down in the stall many times had a tail constantly soaking in the gutter.) Clobbered him good, had quite the dent in the side of his head.

While in the pasture one of our animals stood up after another was standing on the end of her tail. Semi-shredded the end and was bleeding badly. We bound it up with no ill effects - but the result was her switching that tail around like a billy club for a week or so. Had to watch out!

Entertaining trip. Didn't buy any guns (surprising) but found some stuff.

AR15 armorer's wrench ($15) - don't have to borrow one now.

Some Magtech 9mm ammunition - rationing allowed 50 rounds for $17. Family members can use some.

A single 20 round box of factory 348 Winchester Silvertips for $40.

The big one - couldn't resist 8 lbs of SR 4756 for $100.

Good luck. My intel says that gun prices are 50% higher and ammo is scarce at even small shops. My favorite story of hording is that last March (pre hording crisis) my younger (25 years old) daughter loves spicy Cheetos. Sam's Club always has them. My wife goes in and gets the Cheetos but is not happy about shopping for only one item. Well what can I get that I can use??? Toilet paper, it never goes bad. We sat (literally) pretty with two big packages (when they had hundreds) and never felt the need to wake up early and get in a line somewhere. I recall my first driving days in the 70's getting up to get in line to get gas. Odd or Even". The old pumps did not go over $1.00 per gallon so they had to sell you gas in liters. Wow. Even a shopping trip with few purchases is better than sitting at home.

Talk about cabin fever fever

We here in extreme Southeast Oklahoma aren't used to much cold weather. Here is an example; last week we had several 60-70 degree days with mild nights. Right now it is  24 degrees F and has been below freezing for two days. The forecast for the rest of this week and next is single digit temperatures. Forecast for our region on Sunday is up to 12 inches of snow and much heavier snow for the central and northern part of the state. We have had freezing drizzle and light rain for the past two days and it finally quit tonight, which was a good thing, because we were starting to get a good coat of ice on everything. I live on a paved county  road and haven't heard any traffic whizzing along, so I figure it is covered in ice.

If the roads get cleared up enough so that I can make it over to my son's ranch which is about 33 miles away, I plan on going over and trying to stir up a boar hog.

Out of boredom, I went out to the shops and gathered up some unfinished leather projects(belts & holsters) and brought them in the house to finish. Maybe my wife won't get too upset when I take over the kitchen bar as a work bench. This kind of weather probably don't sound bad to a lot of you North landers, but if you are a Southern boy, it is hard to take.

We had bad winters back in the late 70's through mid 80's, and at that time I had cattle and horses to take care of, at least I don't have those kind of things to do anymore. But just grin and bear it, that's the positive outlook.

Can't win for loosing

My back was hurting so bad I had  to get up about 30 minutes ago, hadn't been in bed but a little over an hour. I glanced out the kitchen window and thought things looked white outside. I opened the front door and the ground was covered with sleet. What a surprise, but to make it worse, I turned on the weather and they show light freezing rain just almost to us. Durn, this Southern Boy is not happy. Now I know why there hasn't been any vehicles flying by. Looks like the wild hogs may be safe for a few days, I don't think I will be able to get over the mountain roads and worst of all, my Hot Shot basketball playing Grand Daughter has a basketball game Friday night and I probably won't be able to get there. On second thought, they will probably re-schedule it.

I have dbl cabin fever and no end in sight. My Dr. appointment to get all the staples removed was cancelled today since the VA closed down due to yesterdays snow. I was hoping the doctor would tell me today I can lift more then 1lb and drive a vehicle again. At least next week it is suppose to be in the 40's according to the weather forecast, today it is 1 deg .  We finally get our first snow that is enough to make a snow man and I am afraid to go walk in it for fear of tearing the staples out.
