Bullets Seated into Rifling - .30-30 Part 2

My previous post on this subject described a test of a .30-30 hunting load except that bullets were seated out to engage the rifling .080". I had not previously tried these bullets seated into the rifling since the required COL was too long for magazine function. The point of the exercise was curiosity.

That test and this were at 100 meters with 16 BHN bullets #U321297HP sized down to .312", 32 gns LVR powder and FCLR primer. This test differed in seating the bullets for less rifling engagement (.014" this time), and using a different lube. The barrel was wiped beforehand with Ed's Red and 2500+ lube, followed by a dry patch.

The new lube was a mix of leftovers of a somewhat stiffer consistency than the 2500+. Composition of "MX5" is LBT soft 42%, BAC 21%, LOM 16%, LSM 15% & ATF 6%. It turns out to be a good lube.

The first test with 2500+ lube had some high shots associated with higher velocity, perhaps indicating that 2500+ needed a few shots to settle the POI - not good for a hunting application.

The new lube and the lesser rifling engagement resulted in a good group (five shot 100 meter group of 1.38", Mean Radius 0.64"), AND a fouling shot that went just about dead center of the group.

Conclusions: MX5 lube on this occasion and others has kept the foulers to group or close to it - this will be the hunting lube for now; "bullets into the rifling" looks good for accuracy, but will not be practical for hunting - maybe have just a few long ones in the pocket for single loading; wiping with Ed's Red and 2500 lube may have been beneficial for first shot POI - certainly not detrimental.

Right hand target is fouler from cold clean barrel. Target squares are 1.5".

Do they fill the throat?

Had my best with lightly touching the lands.

You could always top off with a long bullet and then if you need extra to break down or coup de gras then use your others.

Maybe a 308466 loverin style would touch and be shorter other all.

I have a piece of 1/4" brake tube filled with lead about 6-8" long.

Just drop it down the muzzle when you need a cleaning rod but have none.

Thanks Barra.

Bullets are .312" which fill the neck of the case with minimal neck clearance. The end of the .30-30 chamber goes straight down from about .334" to .308" barrel, so there really is no such thing as "filling the throat" for a .30-30. The case neck stands in for what would be the throat in a more modern chamber.

I agree with cast bullets just touching the rifling - or a bit more - where it is possible.

Bottom line in this instance is that the bullet is a given - this is my all time best hunting bullet. It performs on hogs and shoots acceptably at around 2200 fps, or even 2300 with LVR. "Acceptable" in this context is average 2.7" five shot groups at 100 m, or another inch for the faster ones. In my book that's a pretty good combination of accuracy and power.

This is with seating to COL 2.500" (about .060" off the rifling) for reliable magazine feed in the M1899 Savage,

It looks like seating into the rifling can just about halve those groups but at the cost of unreliable feeding. The good news is that velocity and POI appear to be little affected by seating depth, so 2.500" for the magazine and longer for single loading becomes an option. It's really only for the longer shots, or maybe a dog, that the extra accuracy has value.

I reform the flat noses to round using a RN top punch in the lubesizer. This is for the initial lubing and gas checking before serious sizing with the Lee dies. If I'm careless, the lubesiing can shorten the bullets slightly. I could enlarge on this ploy to get the bullets closer to the rifling, though last time I went down this path I broke a couple of lubesizer handles. On that occasion I was upsetting #311407HPs so the nose engaged the rifling.

The next test may be with minimal rifling engagement, perhaps with the faster load.
