Bullet weight in .30-40 krag

I came across a 162 gr. g.c. mold.  Is this a little light for optimum 100yd. target loads in a 1-10 twist .30-40 krag?

For those who want to shoot really long range (about 800 yards), they load the 311284 to 2,100 to 2,200 fps (this depends on what factory ammo does in the rifle) out of the rifle version and use the sights set to the actual range. Those old rifles really do perform out there.

I would suggest 200gr + is a better bet.  And fat for the Krag.  Much like .303 Brit it will likely have a bit throat and longer leade.

Diameter is going to be more important than  weight. The Lee 312-160 bullet made for 7.62 x39 works great in my Krag and is ok in My No.4 .303.  The Ideal 308241 in 125 and 150 grain weights were designed for 100 yards and less in Krag rifles for practice way back. Remember how well 150 grain or so bullets worked in .30/06s with 1-10 twists through two world wars, a police action or two, and a millions of deer,elk, and other game.

 

in ther words don’t get wrapped around the axle about bullet weight alloy or much else.  1100 to 1400 fps is a good 100 yard muzzle velocity and a lot of these loads can be had out of a can of  pistol or shotgun powder and any alloy you have.

I prefer .30-40 Krag cast bullets to be in the 200 grain range. However, my notes indicate good accuracy with the SAECO #315, about 167 grs. using an alloy of app. 15-16 BHN. Depending on the usual factors, like bullet design, diameter, alloy mix, etc., a 162 gr. bullet may be quite accurate. I'd try it. The bore twist guidelines are not firm rules; there are exceptions.

Ruger #3  .30-40 Krag liked the Lyman 311284 and the SAECO #315. This load was used Linotype, sized .311, Gray's #24 lubricant, Reloder #7, seated into the land with a .050 witness mark. I do not remember the powder charge in this load as we at Windhill were helping someone starting to reload. 

Note: I'm getting ready to sell many of my excess molds, the SAECO #315 is one I'll keep. I've had good results in every rifle I've tried this bullet in.

Have had experience with two sporterized Krags, one shot great with the 311284, the other loved the 311291, both were sized  .310 and gas checked.  Both my Ruger #3's in 30/40 like the same bullet..  Velocity was in the 1600 fps.range.
