BUFFALO / big bore .... informal shoot in our future ?

there is some interest in an informal, unofficial fun shoot for big bore , based on the minimalist  ...( g ) ... approach such as the bunny and groundhog shoots .

we could ... now and here ...start discussion of said future event  in this thread, and see what happens.  i would gladly help in any way i can; if you guys have fun, i  have fun . 

again, we do not want to impinge on the classic CBA postals, we want minimal rules and minimal work, and minimum cost .... but for sure maximum fun and .... for me at least i have learned that my pet gun that i think shoots 1 inch at 50 yards never seems to do it when that dang groundhog keeps jumping around ...( g ) .

let's chat for a while about big bores .... min. of 35 cal? .. 40 ? ... 45 ? ...   50 yards ? 100? ... even 200 ??

I tried to link an image but was unable to so if you look at the NMLRA Haffner Standing Buffalo Target TG0100 I think that it would make a good target the buffalo it self measure 16 inches X 11 approx.

This target is 17x25 inches. The price seems reasonable.

American Target Co. makes a 100 yard Buffalo target with a good black bull. I tried to copy and paste but my phone defeated me.

I believe the same thought was raised on the Groundhog thread last night. Currently this is my preferred approach also. Don't change a thing but the distance. There is nothing wrong with lower scores. After all we are not in this for the fame and fortune.

We may well want to change the scoring zones on the target but not much more than that. We could always tweak things in the second year if it is a little too tough. The fun of the 50 yd shoot is using a rifle that otherwise was relegated to the back of the closet. I believe it would be the same here.

FWIWIMHO, why not the same groundhog with same rules at 100 yards, and July deadline?  Of course, a reduced buffalo would work too, but if we already have to groundhog targets, why not another shoot just a little bit further out and those of us who like to punish our shoulders with big bores can shoot them like we do now at those tough ole groundhogs?  Either way, I would like to shoot as long as I have another month to do it in.  We just got rid of our snow a couple days ago from protected areas. and the ice went out of our lake just over a week ago, but a couple of other lakes I like to fish still have hard water on top.

Postal Match - maybe ( I am in AL and prob a LONG way away from a gathering!)?!?  2x 45-70s (Single Shot Rem RB custom/vernier sights & Marlin 1895 with peeps), and 38-55 w/ peeps.  Maybe buffalo bunny gun calibers such as 30 WCF and 32 WS!

I'm all for a shoot!  The post starts as Buffalo/ Big bore!

That makes me think of large caliber guns, Sharps Or Remington Rifles.  KISS is a good way to do this match. Simple rules and no limits.

The group I shoot with we have a 22lr boys rifle match a 22lr Buffalo rifle match It means Boys Rifles or 22lr Buffalo rifles. Simple.  The CBA has 22 different Postal matches.  I shoot quite a few of them. And enjoy and learn from everyone I shoot.  If you want to find something to compete in you can find it here. If we want a Buffalo /Big Bore match lets have one.

I will help in anyway I can Jim. And thank you for the Ground hog shoot It was a blast.

I respond to these Postal surveys because I WANT TO SHOOT THEM! Those who like throw out suggestions/objections but wouldn't shoot it, can do that until they are blue in the face. Like Jim said KISS!!!

Assume plain base cast bullets, anything____cal. and larger. Like the Ground Hog, iron and scoped sight categories. Shooting position might depend on target size. Assume sitting or prone but if a small target maybe consider X-sticks?

I suggest .35 and over, at 100 yds,.and indifferent as to most other rules.  I would shoot my mod '86 or my '74 shiloh sharps, 40-65 cal.

Ken,

For a minimalist shoot, how about 10 shot group at 100 yards on a standard 9-inch paper plate (using same rules in my post above?) Targets are cheap and easy to get, and the distance would make it plenty challenging to shoot a tight, accurate group (if not fired from a bench.) We could even allow for the target to have a 1” or 2” sighter mark in the center (circle, dot, square/on-point diamond, etc.) Shooters would write their specs and data right on the plate and mail it in. Low admin and overhead, fun and challenging to shoot. Obviously, only hits on the plate count, and I’d suggest using average-to-center to measure group size + distance to center of target for final “score.” In my mind, if 9 of 10 shots are under 2” close to the bull, and you have one flier at 4,” you should score higher than someone who had a more open 3” group further from the bull. Just my $0.02.  Ed

If you want to shoot only original black powder cartridges why don't you just go shoot with the BPCR crowd?

Limiting cartridges and firearms is a sure way to severely limit the participation by members.  They shoot bison every year here in AZ with modern rifles and cartridges.  Why impose artificial and restrictive limits on the membership?  I guess we could go the REALLY TRADITIONAL ROUTE and limit weapons to spears and arrows shot and thrown from horseback. 

All snotty replies and opinions aside: limiting calibers is a sure way to limit participation.  Me I think that I will just drive my target over a cliff.

There is a reduced Bear target we shoot OH at 50yds with patched round ball, would be a booger at 100dys Iron sights, it's like the groundhog target maybe a little smaller...the GH target was really big with a very hard to discern scoring area, this is for an old guy with bad eyesight.....I'm in  for whatever

Fire up the new thread!

The CBA has a BPCR Postal shot @ 200-yards, off crossticks. The target is a reduced-size turkey silhouette, mimicking the sight picture you'd see looking at the NRA 385-meter turkey.I'd suggest that the use of bench type cross sticks are allowed IF you must share the line with bench shooters and for safety you cannot get out front to stab your normal sticks into the ground and shoot. The bench type sticks cannot be secured to the bench.

The Scheutzen approach to scoring marginal hits would work good, where the center of the bullet must be on the score area. Most hits like that on the steel targets seem to do good at knocking them over. How about a reduced size buffalo?

I'm biased...I have a .40 caliber!

I think it would be a great idea as a different shoot/match. Consider using the rules (stolen shamelessly from the Greenville Gun Club.) Targets to be decided later as "dinger" targets are usually best fired in a live match setting.

 Rifles Permitted:

Any original or replica rifle that was in use prior to 1895 that originally fired a black powder cartridge. That can include lever actions or single shot.  We do accept the H&R Buffalo Classic as a valid rifle. The Ruger No. 1 rifle in the correct cartridge is also permitted.

Ammunition Permitted:

Any caliber cartridges that were originally loaded with black powder. They can be loaded with black or smokeless powder. Bullets must be lead only, NO gas checks, plated or jacketed.

Sights:

Sights must be open, tang or receiver sights. Globe front sights with inserts are permitted. (I would add period correct external adjustment scopes.)

Shooting Positions (any of the following):

 

  • Prone with or w/o sticks
  • Sitting with or w/o sticks
  • Standing with or w/o sticks
