How important is case length in breach seating? Should the case completly fill the length of the chamber and neck?

Tin the olde days they would cut a chamber and make a case and use that.

The bullets we’re seated in front of the case and the case was just a vessel to hold the powder and seal on firing.

If your seating the base in or nearly into the lands then it don’t matter.

you could get some funky build up like shooting 22 shorts in a 22lr chamber and have to clean out before full necks could be used again.

If you are seating a bullet and the base ends up in the unsized case neck then you have the debate about that little gap between were the case neck ends and chamber end 45 * angle leade/freebore intersection area and if the bullet rivets  under pressure or not before entering the bore.

Strictly out of superstition, I uniformly trim the case length.

I also anneal the case neck so it opens easier and seals the chamber. I do this based on powder smoke residue along the case neck if I do not do this.

My bullets will be fully seated into the throat and Ahead of the case mouth.

My 32-40 CPA came with a split brass case that is a little longer than my cases.

Case length is not as important as case seal, jmho. Don’t resize and anneal at the first signs of smudge works for me.

Slightly flare the case mouth to keep seal.

Anneal it soft.

After a few outings your case will look quite worn and perfectly formed.

If you drop it will look it over with fine detail and may even shed a tear, hoping that it will still fit in your chamber.

The primer pocket will eventually loose it’s grip and you may even use a ball bearing on the primer pocket and a rod to smack the primer seat a little tighter for more use.

Well so I have read.

Who would use one of those rare to find 30wcf  cases for hundred of rounds anyway.

‘Wish they did that sort of shooting round here. I could learn a lot.

Harvey Donaldson reported using a 28-30 case (30-30 base case head) 1,800 shots before the case actually had the primer pocket worn where it wouldn't hold the primer. He was one of the Scheutzen era shooters. I have a couple of reformed 45-70 cases used for Scheutzen that have gone 500 shots each and still act like new.
