I am a new member and plan on shooting 100 and 200 yard postal bench rest matches. I’m confused as to how to shoot the target...do I shift the square or the main circular target?

In my first match after a multi year gap. I alternated between aiming at the square and the center of the target.  I don't recommend that approach.

ha! ... in my 40 years of racing toy cars, i now confess that i pulled some very embarrassing boners .... ... looking back, i see that the stories of failure i can now tell my buddies over a pizza  are worth more than the little plastic trophy i might have won ...  i do hope, though, that as i tell these stories, my buddies mistake the tears rolling down my cheeks as tears of joy ...

If you have a benchrest target without the square, you can set your scope several inches off the target center and shoot the group. As Ric says, you still have a clean spot to aim.

With .22 LR at 100 yards and a 36X scope, I often shoot a bullet hole to aim off the center with the scope set three inches high for the record group.

One advantage of using the square for aiming in a match is being able to easily quarter the square for hold-off in a slight wind.

Most people use the little white squares for the scope's cross hairs. The bullet goes into the circular pattern. That way if you are punching the heck out of the center, you have a clean unmarked spot to aim the cross hairs at.
