Air rifle scope

My Beeman 177 springer is my go to pigeon blaster on the farm. The only problem is the way it destroys a 4x Simmons after a few hundred rounds. Right now I see 2 sets of crosshairs. One stills kills flying rats and the other is ....not very useful. It's hard to remember which one is the good one. Does anyone have better choice that can hold up to a springers' recoil? Redot? One that doesn't cost an arm and a leg would be preferred.

Look for one rated for 458 Winchester Magnum. That is as close to an air rifle scope as you can find. Bite the bullet and buy a real air rifle scope that will last your lifetime. Sorry, nothing cheap will work.

I have had good luck with these scopes. I have them on a couple magnum springers and they hold up pretty well.

They were about 60 bucks when I bought mine on Amazon, but they appear to have gone up a little. Hope this helps.

The only scopes that I have seen that hold up to springer air rifles are scopes made for springer air rifles. I have had good luck with Hawke scopes just make sure that you are buying a scope made for springers.

About 40 years ago, I got an RWS 45 spring piston air rifle. After shooting it with a peep sight for several years, I put a Leupold 3x9 EFR scope on it. It focuses close enough for 10 meters in the basement. This rifle only has the small dovetail and the base has to be locked down with screws into the base. Before doing that, the rings started leaning backwards from the forces involved.

I had exactly the same model 45 and ended up with a Beeman scope on it. It still wears the same scope today.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate learning what works and what doesn't from the experienced shooters. Since I aways relied on the Irons before but low light in the back of a quonset with just a head peaking out meant a scope. I hate it when they stick their tongue out at my missing them. The Simmons was just laying around not doing anything so I'm not crying about it dying. It is interesting that I can put something like that on a 44 mag contender with no problem but a springer.. .no way. The scope companies often say not for springers while others just say nothing about restrictions. The rifle came with its own scope and it was about as clear as if a kid fingered it for an hour or two. Hence the experiment and on to more research.

As I understand it, the recoil impulse for air rifles is from back to front while for firearms it is front to back. Reticles in air rifle scopes are on “the other” side of the lens.

I have a FWB 124D, bough my first one from Beeman's, in 1974, with a Bushnell Scopechief iv with the bar on the bottom, shook the lens out in 1990, factory fixed it still using it, according to Beeman's the scope was modified for springer air rifles

of course the way it is mounted sucks and has to be re tightened about every 100 shots or so, scope slides on the rifle, locktite and such doesn't work

looking for a solution I come across this, in a recommendation from a poster on the GTA site, of course it looks like unobtanium

the older Leupold Vari-X II and III are spring gun rated per Leupold.i  have used them on Heavy sprung .25 calibers and they hold up.Like said above The recoil is foreword not back on a spring gun so some scopes that will hold up to a 458 won't hold up to a spring airgun. The RWS 54 with its recoil-less sled ruined two Burris scopes on mine but an old 10X Leopold held strong. Hawke.are good airgun scopes as mentioned.

Thanks for the explanation on the recoil impulse and why a 458 mag is not necessarily proof of durability for a springer. Now to hunt for the right one with you guys advice.

Also as ugly as the UTG Bug Busters are they have been flawless for me.They are short and need an extension base though.

Unlike linoww, I found that any scope that could survive on the .450 Watts Magnum would work on a springer.

Just got a reply from Leopold asking if the current EFR scopes are spring airgun tough.

Yes. Absolutely they are.

Thanks for the update. My Leupolds have been good on other things so I'd hate to blow one up on a 100 buck air rifle. So I'll check out the efr too.
