A naughty word and breaking all the rules.

I've noticed very little discussion regarding 350 Legend. Almost like it's a bad word or something? Well if that ruffles your feathers hold onto your top knot. My newest PB slinger only has 10" of  barrel and not a sliver of wood on the brace.

A few of the places I hunt deer I used to carry my 44 revolver. But MidwayUSA was giving away this upper so I decided to try one. I still like my 45 Raptor but not for those few drives, I am getting old.

Anyway, a buddy gave me close to a thousand 260 grain smooth sided cast bullets and I ordered the Lee 200 grain 358 mold and I have a 158 grain 38 mold. So will see how things progress. My buddy likes 2400 with the heavy 260s so will start with that first. Not sure if this is interesting to anyone or not but I thought I might throw it out there.

Ken, you have my address...350 brass would be a very nice Christmas present.

PS, Good luck to all my deer hunting friends known and unknown. Hunt safe.

I'd say the shorter barrels affect how efficient the powder burns thus velocity fluctuation.

I was just watching this thread since I am interested in the cartridge but I see something in the chart on barrel length vs velocity posted by MP1886 and wonder if anyone else saw it. It looks like the average velocity goes up and down slightly between lengths until it gets to 20 inches where things settle down to a more normal decline until you get to the 17 - 16 inch mark. Any thoughts on that? Squid Boy

It appears that unless you are in a state that requires a straight sided case for hunting, there is not much interest in that round.

So that thing's legal in Illinois?  No wonder I see so much brass on the ground at the range.

No center-fire metallic cartridge hunting for big game unless with a straight sided handgun cartridge not over 1.4" case length with ft.-lb. requirements. It's OK for varmints though and small game.

There's a guy that goes by the handle of "CWLongshot" on both the

"Artful bullet" and "Cast Boolits" forums. He also has a you-tube channel with the same handle.

He has pretty extensive knowledge of working with the. 350 Legend. With bolt guns and the AR platform too.

Ya might check him out. He's always willing to help.

As usual, waiting on a couple of sizing dies before I try 200 and 260 grain cast. Any 350 powder/charge ideas for the Lee .358 200 grain mold?

MP1886,

"Hmmmm interesting.  I thought hard before I built an AR15 in 350 Legend.  I've had it quite a while now and have shot jacketed and cast from it.  So far have not shot PC so can't vouch for that....yet.  With jacketed and cast my rifle is a hole driver!  Not much interest in iit huh? Well because of the nay sayer's out there bashing it down!"

Sorry, not bashing it down, but it doesn't fill a need for us here west of Rockies. AR's are not common hunting guns out here and there are better cartridges for our use. Nothing bad to say, just that the 35 Remington and 35 Whelen fill any need with having for a 35 caliber.

Entirely differeent back east Ric.  They're after woods cartridges, may some open fields.  I've had friends make 250 yard shots with the 35 Remington with success.

I think you're wrong about AR's out west.  They have them in calibers that's suitable for that areas. Most often an AR is more accurate then sporting bolt rifles.  They make AR10's in very useful calibers like 300 Win Mag.  Hell they even have them in 45-70.  I think you need to take a look at my friends creation the 375 Raptor on an AR10.

 MP1886,

You said "If you know how you can load bullets fatter then .357". I'd be interested in your processes, and I'll pass along to my cousin. His son's CVA single shot would start closing hard after just a few shots with bullets sized .356". He had to tap out a live round from the muzzle with a rod because it was stuck enough that the extractor could not lift the round free from the chamber. The build up was creating a short headspace effect and the round was being jammed into it by the breech when the action closed hard. So, if your 'how to' prevents that (the lead build up) from happening, it would be good to share that information with the rest of us.

I want you to do a few things few.  I want you to take a fired case that hasn't been resized yet and I want you to take a fresh .356 bullet and see if you enters the case mouth easy.  If not how snug if it's a little tight.

I'm going to post the 350 Legend SAAMI specs for both the cartridge and chamber. You can see that the little bit of freebore is .357.  If you do load fatter bullets then that you have to make sure that any part of the full bearing band diameter doesn't protrude past the case mouth.  You can get away with .357 bearing band, but on AR's their finicking because their bolt doesn't have any camming power.

I feel the boy has something the matter with his CVA. It shouldn't be building up lead on that headspacing ledge. Have him clean that chamber out real good.

Get back with me when you find out the answers to my questions.  Study that SAAM diagrams well.

BTW I'm shooting 180 grain .358 jacked Remington Core-Loks roundnose soft points out of my AR with no problems at with real nice accuracy.

It appears that working up a load for an AR platform is in my future (using powder coated cast bullets).  Nephew bought one for his son.  The 10 year old (at daddy's side) used it for his first hunt this year.  Took a nice doe from 100 yards.  Bang, flop.  Just a little high on a boiler room shot.  Through and through and destroyed lungs.  Negligible recoil.

A friend of mine (gun writer) refers to it as "frozen spinach on a stick".  I am a "little" nicer on my attitude towards the round.

If I can get it to work well I will post the results and method.

Congratulations

to that 10 year old boy.  You can't ask for better performance then what he got from that round.  Pretty much what a 35 Remington does.

Well because of the nay sayer's out there bashing it down!  Seems a good faction of the shooting world don't like the "black rifles" and never will.  Let's take back east.  One of the most popular calibers for whitetail deer hunting is the 35 Remington.  I'm not going to type a bunch of words here, going to cut to the chase.  The AR15 in 350 Legend is an AR15 35 Remington!  I get damn good velocities and accuracy with the 200 grain cast bullets and up.  I get NO leading anywhere!  If you know how you can load fatter bullets then .357 and that crap that it's a basically a 9mm is just that.....crap.  I don't have an expensive barrel either.  It's an el cheapo and I'm so impressed with it.  Also it's only a 16 inch barrel.  I'm going to put a chart up here called The 350 Legend By The Inch.

My cousin's son had a problem shooting lead in his 350 Legend CVA break open single shot. After a few shots, the lead build up behind the headspace 'shoulder' caused chambering issues. I touched on the subject toward the end of the post here titled 'Lead Build Up In Chamber Throat'. Hope you have better luck with your 350 Legend. Let us know how it goes and what your process is to prevent the problem.
