Hi all

Went to the range this morning. Shot the Husky with the CBE 309 162 boolit. Load was 13.8gr 2400, CCI primer, Freechex III 0.016 aluminium gas check, alloy was 40-1, sizing .312 and neck expanded to .310 for seating. A slightly heavier bullet on the same load does 1650fps so I imagine this is doing 1700fps. Too wet for the chrony. I fitted a diopter to my glasses to sharpen up the sights as the light was far from good. After the first two shots I couldn't make out where the rest were landing! Not bad for a 5 shot group with open sights I think.

Jeff, Wonder what kind of group You'd have gotten if the light had been good!!??!!! That's great shootin' for sure! Is that a 30-40 Krag cartridge You're shooting? Cheers from central Nebraska DocBob

.30/30 Bob. The Husky bolt guns were made in .25/20, .32/20 .30/30 and .45/70. They weight next to nothing so a .45/70 would be a real handful.

I see that you've left the flare on the loaded round. Was that done for a reason?

Just a dummy round for sitting the seating die.

Very nice shooting. 100 yards?

Guess 13.8 grs of 2400 would be pretty light in the .30-40 Krag. I think I'll try that load in my Winchester '94 rifle made in 1898. I have a tang sight on it and I cast the Lyman 31114 bullet.

Actually it is exactly the same charge I burn in the .303 Brit too under a 205gr bullet for 1380fps and fine accuracy.

Why 13.8 and not 14gr? Because that is what the Lee Auto disc throws. I try and taylor my loads to the Auto Disc.

Jeff, How many yards was that?

50m or 55 yards. Probably the best open sight group I have ever shot.

Jeff: Thanks, I located Simpson's web site. Nothing on line now, but I'll get in touch with them. I cast for my 30-30 and a nice older Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. -Ed

Jeff,

I very much enjoyed your article in the Fouling Shot.

It has motivated me to work more with my .30-30 barel fir the H&R Handi Rifle.

It really seems to shoot just about anything ok, even pointed jacketed types but especially cast bullets. It's my 'starter' gun when breaking in a new shooter or hunter. Single shots rock. It really likes the old Frank Marshall BOWM load using the Lyman 311284, a real heavy. Also good with a couple Ranch Dog designs.

Around 2001 or so, I bought a Browning Traditional Hunter single shot in 30-30. It made two trips to the range with cast bullets and the results were outstanding. I cleaned it, put if back in my safe to play with when I retired. Well I retired in 2008 and it is still in the safe. Time that changes I should think.
