Was in the basement & found a 12 oz. tin of Mother's California Gold car wax. It says “pure carnuba wax". I bought it a long time ago & never used it. Was wondering if anyone has any ideas/recipies using this in a homemade bullet lube.

If someone else had of done to me what I did to myself . . . I'd have killed him. Humility is an asset. Heh - heh.

Carnuba is what makes Johnson's Paste Wax work so well as an additive to get the terrific Recluse 45:45:10 Tumble lube.

I would not hesitate to use your carnuba car wax instead of JPW in the Recluse formula.

I wonder what they put in it to make it pliable? Because the pure Carnauba wax I get is in solid bar form.

Volatile solvents soften the carnuba wax. I looked up online the MSDS for Johnson's Paste Wax and the solvents for the carnuba in JPW were listed.

Some solvents are better than others for use in bullet lubricants. The Recluse 45:45:10 recipe has you boil off a portion of the factory solvents and replace them with odorless Mineral Spirits. Recluse did a lot of practical research on that and I completely agree with his wonderful results is his selection of Mineral Spirits as a better solvent for carnuba in bullet lubricants.

I don't know what all the ingredients are. The can doesen't say. But I'm going to experiment with it. Maybe with beeswax. I'm looking for suggestions. Oh, by the way. I had read on another forum that Johnson's paste wax was no longer available. Funny, I found it in Wal-Mart the other day.

Like everything you read on the internet and forums: take it with a grain of salt, checks your facts in books and real reference material, and anybody can post anything on the internet. Just like this post!!! Ric

A reasonable substitute for JPW is a good quality neutral shoe or boot polish like Esquire brand. The better quality shoe /boot polishes are better quality due to their higher carnuba wax  content. I have used Esquire neutral shoe polish as a substitute for JPW  in the 45:45:10 Recluse formulation of tumble lube and it works fine.

I can find it several places around me. Orchard Supply Hardware, Lowe's, Wally World, others. But mostly right out in my shop. (And it is no small feat to find anything out there!) I have a lot of cast iron machinery and use JPW on the surfaces. Makes it slickery and voids rusting.

If I were to flip the coin, I'd build bullet lube from others experience. I also would not waste the car polish - it works great for adding to the media when polishing bullets!

Look online for cosmetic making supplies, usually have flake carnuba there. They use it in lipstick and some lotions. Use sparingly, if your lube is too stiff, reduce the carnuba.

Jeff, I ordered some flaked Carnuba was (4 oz.), 1 lb. of triple filtered beeswax and have 1 lb. of petroleum jelly. This materials seems to be used a lot. I was told it should be 1:1 as far as beeswax/petroleum jelly. But how much of the Carnuba should I add? I don't want it real soft as I do have heaters on two of my sizers. I'm going to make 1” x 4” hollow sticks. Was wondering if 1” pvc conduit would work for molds and would I need mold release in order to be able to break the sticks free from the mold?

keep the carnuba low. below 5%, 2% is plenty. it's benefit is to harden a lube and shine the bbl. it's also a vegetable fat and changes in the cold weather. if adding it to a lithium grease the smallest amount will drastically harden the lube.

cooking down the jpw is to remove the turpentine solvent. you then replace that with the m/s so the lube will dry. jd couldn't figure that part out, till i told him how i made the 50-50/50-50/25 and 3-1/10% lubes.
