thanks for the reply I was wondering because my owners manual states 40-65 black powder only but in a 45-70 you can use smokeless. Walt

18 grs 4759 and sheet of tp, saeco 640 and 740 bullets. for 40-65

works in my browning and has simular velocity to black. I believe Forest Amus uses the same.

Welcome aboard new guys. I'm planning to do the opposite, use BP in my H&R single shot .444. Funny huh? We always want something else than what we have.

I belive BP in 444 is what Forest Amus calls a 44-63

I read somewhere that the reason for Brownings warning was no SAAMI spec for 40-65. Apparently the cartridge predated SAAMI.

Used trail boss in mine(browning 1885 40-65.) .409 420g spitzer Bufflo arms bullet mold (bullet cast at 414g-419g) lubed with matthews #1. Per IMR load cartage complety full, say it took 70g then times by .9 (90%) equels 63g this is max load. The real amount of powder is going to be much less.  This is just a number to work with. At work so dont have loading data. Then work up load from there. Works very well don't have any photos of groups but shot 1 MOA at 100 yards.

I'll trade you a 45-70 Browning BPCR that you can use smokeless in for your 40-65. Jack

I recently “accumulated” a like-new Browning BPCR in .40-65 as a partner to my Greener Martini MkI re-barreled to .40-65. I am trying a “duplex” load of 5 grains of SR4759 under 48 grains of WC860 and the Redding 300 grain SPFB bullet. I have shot the WC860 loads in the past without the duplex “kicker” but had a lot of unburned powder left in the chamber. My hope is black powder velocities and accuracy without having to clean the brass and barrel.

I've tried similar loads with a 45-70 and a .444 Marlin H&R. My inspiration was Paul Matthew's book “40 yrs. with the 45-70". In it he uses surplus 4831.

I shot with Paul for a number of years, spotted for him when he set the Pig record which has since been broken...4831, the stuff he bought in a paper bag,  is the reason Paul shot right handed, left eyed

seems an old Rolling Block come apart...at least that is the way it was related to me

Wow, my WC860/Sr4759 duplex loads were better than expected. So good in fact that I went home and loaded another 25 with 3.5 grains of SR4759 and .44 grains of WC860 under a 370 grain .408 diameter slug. These were even more accurate than the others. Clean burn, little or no unburned powder in the bore. I am getting the same accuracy and point of impact as using 62 grains of Goex FFg and 3/16” compression but without the case and bore cleaning. Lucky for me I have about 32+ pounds of WC860 to play with. I can see these are going to be my “go-to” loads with the Browning .40-65BPCR for the foreseeable future.
