300 PRC Cast Bullet Velocity Spikes

In this video, I am shooting eight NOE-314-198-SP bullets, which weigh 200 grains, at targets 200, 300, and 400 metres. Notice the spikes in the velocity of some of the bullets. The average velocity is around 2440 fps, but some bullets flew over 2500 and 2600 fps. If anyone can shed light on this, I'd appreciate it. My load is 63-grain S361, which has a similar burning rate to H4831, a 1-grain dacron filler, and a Remington 9.5 large rifle primer. I use Hornady brass and a Lyman Gen 6 powder dispenser. Moreover, I also noticed these spikes with my monolithic bullets, although the sudden increases are not as frequent.

I had great variation with my 338 br using H4895. I went back to Varget and lost 150fps, but  brought sd to about 15. u may want to try a different powder

The 300 PRC is a fairly large case. You could be getting inconsistent ignition. Have you tried a set with Large Rifle Magnum primers? I do realize that they're about as easy to find as frog feathers. Just using a filler won't necessarily fix ignition problems.

How many rounds down the barrel?

Are the cast,powder coated?

Definitely inconsistent ignition.  S361 is a slow burning spherical (ball) powder.  Such powders almost always require magnum strength primers for consistent ignition.  The Remington 9 1/2 primers just aren't making the grade.  Try a magnum strength primer such as WLRMs, Federal 215s or even CCI 250s.

Thanks for the questions. Yes, I can do 4 to 5 rounds, then stop shooting for the barrel to cool. I'll check my data and see if it was round 6,7 or 8. If not, I'll look at the other suggestions the members made. Thanks

Shopdog, yeah, they're powder-coated.

What does your grouping look like? IMO that cartridge will take lots of testing (powders, bullet types) to hit on something worth bragging about.
