.22 Rimfire Shooting

I recently posted about shooting my CZ 452 to my 30/06 plain base thread. This will pertain to repeating the ammo test with my 10/22. When I picked up the rifle it was pretty beat up so I figured it'd be a good project. I replaced the barrel with a 16 inch Green Mountain fluted barrel. Sanded down the stock and painted it with truck bed liner after losing the barrel band and angling the front end. Also sanded the action down to bare aluminum. Pillar bedded it and glassed the first inch of barrel and rear of the action. Added an auto bolt release, aftermarket magazine release and Ruger BX trigger. Scope is a 4x14 Mueller set at14x. In hindsight I wish I would have gone with an 18 inch or so heavier barrel.

 

Ammo is an assortment of Eley along with CCI SV. Obviously the gun doesn't like the CCI but I guess that's par for the course with .22s. My CZ liked the CCI the best. Eley Match isnt included because I ran out. Below is the gun and target from today. Thanks once again to George Damron for donating the Eley ammo.

I really appreciate the offer George but I think I'll stick with my CZ and put this one away for the time being. This thing felt like a toy compared to the CZ.

I sprung for the Green Mountain 28” bull barrel. The extra length seems to even out bunk ammo a little bit. I put a Weaver T16, Boyds pro-varmint, and Kidd trigger in a bag kit on it along with all the hand fitting I could think of. It’s impossible to shoot off hand but it’s a great bench plinker at 175 yards.

Dane is the Kidd trigger as good as they say? My BX is about 2 1/2 pounds out of the box but has some creep. Over travel is ok but the creep is a bit of a distraction.

Hi Pat, worth every dime to me. Mine breaks at about 1.75 with the barest amount of creep and no over travel along with a shorter reset. When I say barest I mean that I can rarely even detect it. If I build another 10/22 I will use the stock trigger housing and the Kidd parts.

Thanks for starting this thread Pat.  I got into 22 benchrest about 5 years ago and really enjoy it.  First started at 25 yards indoors (still shoot that) and soon decided I "needed" a quality 22.  Bought a CZ 457 MTR.  After a few years I noticed the first shot from a cold barrel (clean or fouled) was WAY off, before it settled down.  Read an in depth article on cleaning, got out the bore scope and found the dreaded carbon ring at the front of the chamber.  Scrubbed that out with JB Bore Compound and no more first shot flyers!

After I retired I was able to shoot the 2 50-yard outdoor matches that are near here, but on Tuesdays and Fridays.  For this I broke out my 10-22 T.  Funny thing, the more I spent on ammo, the higher my scores!  The appx $8 a box stuff varied 1 grain in weight; I thought I could sort it and get better scores.  Jury still out on that.  I took 2 cartridges apart that were 1 full grain different.  The heavy one had a bullet that was 2/3 of a grain heavier than the light one, and a case that was 1/3 grain heavier than the light one.  Powder charge was the same.  $15 dollar a box stuff varied only 1/4 grain.  You get what you pay for...

That's cool Glenn but please don't lead me down the 20 dollar a box path! Funny but Tenex didn't do that God awful great in either of my guns. In fact using big buck Eley Match I got 2 shots out of 15 that ran under 1000 fps. One was 889 and the other 915 fps. There's a 22 BR match on Weds. at the range I go to. Those guys use some fancy guns and scopes. It does look like fun and I can see doing it but I dont really want to build an expensive rifle just for that. They are really accurate though. My CZ varmint is enough to fill in the times when I don't feel like casting. Plus it's fun. That CZ MTR you're shooting is really a nice gun. How does it do at 50?

for Economic fun with a 22rf and high quality rifles ... try position shooting ...  a CZ or fine old Win. 52 or Rem. 40x will do just fine and medium good ... $10 a box stuff ... will get you in the top half at local shoots ...

you can even set your own classes ... for us old arthritic types, maybe standing only ... or heck, prone only  ... combine some shootin and a nap at the same time ...

that is the good news ...

ok, the bad news ...

when I was shooting ARA bench, and everyone was complaining about the cost of winning ammo ... I brought up the less stressful position shooting sport several times ...   not one of about 200 bench shooters took the bait ...  

gotta have 5 or 10 shooters to make competition fun ...

Pat, I have the Kidd two stage trigger and I picked it up used. It is wonderful and even better after I sent it to Kidd for a cleaning and adjustment. There was a bit of miscommunication. I asked for 1 lb. thinking I'd get 1 lb. first stage, 1 lb. second stage. What they sent me was 8 oz. and 8 oz. The cleaning and adjusting is free I needed to pay shipping.

I am pleased to say 8/8 is very very shootable even off hand. Oh and the rifle is a full blown Kidd in a Victor-Titan stock. The only Ruger parts are the magazines

Pat, I haven't shot the MTR in the 50 yard matches.  I would have to shoot it in Limited class against the $$ custom guns.  The indoor 25 yard matches don't worry too much about classes, just shoot for fun.

The 50 yard matches are a little more structured. I shoot the 10-22T in Squirrel Rifle (no bolt guns) and Sporter class.  Limited class about anything goes except you have to use a 2-piece rest, and Unlimited allows a 1-piece rest.  At 50 yards we shoot the IBS 50-yard rimfire 25-bull target with a 0.500" 10-ring.  The 25 yard matches use the USBR 25-bull target with a 0.100" 10-ring.  That's challenging with factory rifles.  You have to obliterate the 10-ring to get an X.

That sounds like a lot of fun Glenn and the ease of the whole thing has to be fantastic. Like I said before I've looked at your CZ online and really like it.

Duke I'd love to have a 2 stage Kidd trigger breaking at 8 oz. But putting it on the thing I have would be a waste of good money. In your case with the gun you described it makes perfect sense. If you ever think of it could you post a picture? Who made all the parts? I never thought I'd say it but I can now understand people getting into building high dollar super accurate .22s. Probably because I never had what could be considered anywhere near an accurate .22 rifle. Shooting at a .100 ten ring would be a lot of fun.

I remember the first time I shot my tuned 40X with Midas at 50 yards ...   something that I didn't know I had been missing suddenly revealed itself  ...

So I’m fooling around getting up the courage to order a CPA Stevens 44 1/2, for use in CBA BR CENTERFIRE matches. And then along comes these .22 rimfire crazies!

I have (2) .22 rimfires. One is an old Winchester bolt action single shot, a Christmas gift from my dad when I was 12. The other is an Anschutz 14” Exemplar, bolt action handgun silhouette “pistol”. I do have a Neil Jones .22 rim thickness gauge…. but…..

These two can’t come close to the guns, etc. that are being kicked around here…..wow, another whole new world..,.but extremely interesting!

Looked in my loading room and there is a brick of CCI along with maybe (150) random Winch, Rem, Wolf, etc. No Ely or any other fancy brands. But if I got drug into this, my stash would need to change. There are a few CBA BR shooters up here who have a .22 barrel for their CPA rifle. The sticker shock of getting the CPA is still present, so no .22 barrel today, but maybe......

   CCI Standard Velocity costs the same as most Hi-Vel bulk ammo and is a good place to start without breaking the bank.

Ok, so here is another twist.

ELR .22lr, Extreme Long Range .22.

I came up with a course of fire from 50yds. to 400 plus. all reactive steel.

Smallest target is 1 inch a  circle, the targets then move up to diamonds. 2.75 inches(2 inches square on end).

2-12 inches out to 300 plus yards. They are set 4 targets per color, 4 colors to shoot. I can shoot 4 shooters per relay this way. 15 minutes to measure and shoot your 4 targets.

They are set at unknown distances.  You have a sheet that give you the size and color, you measure it and do the math to give you distance. Then  you look at your drop sheet and add your elevation. Oh the wind!  add your wind in and off you go.

Most use a First Focal plane Scope. MOA you need a reticle to measure targets. A EBR 7C works well.

3 shots per target first shot hits are 3pts. One point for next two shots if hit 5 pts. total of 16 targets and 48 shots per match.

80 points is a perfect score we have a few 60's but no perfect scores yet.  I have been doing this for 4 years now......

It sure is fun and it is easy to set up!

   I was going to give you some data on the MTR at 50 yards, but the wind was blowing steady at 17 mph, gusting to 30!  I fired a few groups with an old Remington 510 converted to magazine feed (like a 511).  Back when I first got it (about 1990) I was shooting a lot of Federal Lightning probably because I could get it for $10 a brick.  It did shoot well, but what I have left over from that stash got a little wet and the bullets look slightly corroded.  Stuff didn't lead but didn't shoot well either.  Shot a few groups with CCI-SV and managed one group of .80 at 50 yards (first group out of the just cleaned barrel).  The other 2 were 1.41 and 1.19.  Not bad for such a lightweight rifle.

Also got out an old Savage-Anschutz Mark 10 that had been a club rifle years before I got it.  Despite the wind it shot 5-shot groups of .73, .62, 1.70, .76 and 1.45 with CCI-SV.  I was going to sight in the 10-22 T at 100 yards for today's match but decided that wouldn't work too well!

And yes i did shoot a match at 100 yards today, at the club in the mountains (Buffalo Creek Gun Club, 8100 feet elevation).  They were using the 50 yard smallbore target A-23/5R, the typical 5-bull target but with the x,10 and 9 ring areas white, 8 and 7 black, 6 and 5 white.  I usually consider 100 yard 22 RF shooting rather daunting, akin to shooting CBs at 200 yards.  The conditions today were fantastic.  I managed to keep all but three shots of the 40 "in the white."  X ring is .400, 10 ring .900, 9 ring 1.900. Below are the best and worst targets.  Ammo was SK-Standard+ ($8 a box). Fun way to end the season!

Glenn those are really good scores and groups for 100 yards. A lot better than I got when I tried it. What gun were you using? I'm going to have to find some SK ammo to try out. I've read good things about it and Lapua. Wolf Match gets pretty good reviews too and I think I read it's in actually manufactured by Eley and is Contact. These 22s are a lot more fun than I ever remember them being. Being stuck with the fact that ammo can be a little spotty as to quality depending on what day of the week it was manufactured can be a pain but I guess that's part of the game. If nothing else they're easy to deal with. No casting or reloading. Just throw some stuff in a box and head to the range. Plus shooting groups at 50 yards of well under an inch every time at 50 yards is a definite ego booster. You're a lot farther along and have better equipment than I am or have but it's great seeing actual results to compare to.

Pat, I was shooting the 10-22T at the match today with a 4-16 AO Redfield scope. I just weighed my Leupold 24X and the 10-22T will make weight with it so I'm going to put it on there. 16x was a little weak at 100. Glenn

I retired from full time work five years ago. For a retirement present I bought a 10/22 Talo varmint and a case of CCI SV. I mounted a Sightron 4x12 AO on it and almost every day day shot a box or two off the bench at 50 yards for lunch instead of eating. I lost ten pounds. Best damn diet plan I have ever come up with.
