Hunting with M92 44 mag

I hunt with a Rossi M92 in 44 mag and I'm looking for a god stiff load for hunting Black-tailed deer (150# on the hoof) and elk with.  I was thinking on a 255gr hard cast such as this one from Cast performance http://www.castperformance.com/Detail.bok?no=12 or Bear tooth bullets What wold be my best choice? or is there a better bullet for hunting? Thanks

BTB,

I would choose a bullet with a larger flat nose.  I don't keep up with commercial cast bullets but someone makes one they call a WFN (Wide Flat Nose).  This would be a better choice.  The flat on the nose does all the work since you don't get any expansion.  The bigger, the better.

I did not know if the “wfn” style bullet would feed in a lever gun?  Guess I'll buy some and try it

The Wide Flat Noses (WFN) of Veral Smith's design feed in the Marlin leverguns just fine. Federal Cast-Core 300-gr. are of this type if yopu want to try a few before you buy a mould.

I was also looking atheis one from Lee http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=516757&t=11082005 I have a Lee REAL mould for my Sharps carbine and really like it.  Price is good and I cast a lot of good bulleets with is easily.

my favorite bullet for 44 lever guns is believe it or not the rcbs 240swcgc. It has run like butter in all of my guns and is probably the most accurate overall 44 bullet ive found. My favorite load with it is 19-22 grains of wc820 (depending on which load shoots best) and a fed mag primer.

you may want to measure that bullet. It looks alot like the rcbs 200rf and if so i doubt if its over .429 as thats the as cast diameter of that mold. It was designed for teh 4440 not the 44 mag

According to the box they are .431, the 44/40 are .427.  I'll measure them and see what they are.

ran the 44 over the chrono today the 200gr 9gr unique RNFP 1300 the 240 XTP 24hr H110 1750 with a ES of 9fps! and the Hornady RNFP 265 21gr H110 1600 Now I just need to go buy some heaver cast bullets!

Hello to all, this is my first post here!

   I am a big fan of using the .44 mag on both blacktailed deer and elk (mostly because that is all I have around here!).  I cast a 255gr PB RCBS bullet with 23grs W296 for about 1800fps out of my 24” Marlin CB.  I also use the 429244 with 23grs W296. All my casting is done from straight WW's.   Both loads do a great job out of rifle and pistol for deer and elk, within a reasonable distance.  Here in SWW ranges are short and the brush is thick!

I"ve also taken a few elk and a 1/2  dozen deer with the 429640 in revolvers, 44 leverguns and also the 444 Marlin.  It is a SUPERB killer.  From straight WW's it weighs about 293 grs when sized and lubed with GC.
