Hi fellas. I needed some 8mm gas checks, for a new project and this is my simple setup. I looked at what I already had in the workshop and found a 10mm wad punch, that cut the .011” Alum flashing easily. The discs come out at .386", so I bored a piece of rifle barrel to .390", with a .333” hole at the bottom, to form the check. The forming punch, is .310” at the end and .386” on the shank. The shank keeps the forming punch centralised and the little arbour press pops the finished check out the bottom of the die. I made the arbour press, when I was doing night school back in '78 and this is the first time I've found a good use for it. :)These checks are for a 32-40, that I have built on a Martini Cadet action and barrel. The cadet barrel slugged at .320", so was a good candidate for this cartridge. I got a .320” sizer, from our own mould maker, Cast Bullet Engineering and these bullets come together really well. http://s568.photobucket.com/user/243myra/media/IMG_0335_zps0d5cff91.jpg.html>http://s568.photobucket.com/user/243myra/media/IMG_0334_zps261415bc.jpg.html>

Please consider adding a video of your check making procedure to this post. Your setup looks nice and uncomplicated and I bet many would like to see how it actually works in practice while you talk us through your steps.

Thanks Glenn and Ken. Here you are Gary.

Try it now.

That piece of aluminium sheet, that I cut the discs from, was 6"x 4 3/4” and I got 139 checks from it. I worked out the cost of the piece at 15cents. You all can do the math ;) I also fixed the problem of the sides being chopped out of the check. I polished the inside of the forming die and they come out even better than before.

hey tony ... looks like your press is a little rusty ( note: me not casting stones here .. ) ... my most fun de-ruster is to smear ketchup out of the bottle, let set overnight, and wipe off and inspect ... might take several cycles.

enjoyed your vidio... do you think a 1/2 thou clearance fit on the shank would be better ?

kenRust!!?? That's not rust! That's Browning ;)It used to be oiled and better looking than that, but it got some Nitric acid fumes on it a few years ago and I didn't notice till it was totally Browned :) So I just oiled it again and left it. Like I wrote earlier, it sat unused for lots of years and this is the first real job it's had. I'm glad you like the video and I think that if you could get all the bullet shanks to come out the same size, it would be a miracle. Some of these checks are a little loose and some I have to snap on. They are all well and truly attached, once I put them through the sizer, though.

Yeap.  That's how Charlie started out.  My first tool was just like that.  Worked brilliantly as does yours.
